Last night on #PoliticsNation, we examined the new film Aftershock, which brings a powerful and necessary look at the 2006 killing of Sean Bell and the long fight for justice that followed. I was joined by Sean’s fiancée, Nicole Paultre Bell, and actor Richard Lawson, who portrays me in the film. Nicole reminded the nation of who Sean was: a loving son, devoted father, and family man whose life was taken in a hail of 50 shots by NYPD officers on the eve of his wedding day. She also spoke to the pain, resilience, and determination it took to keep his memory alive and stand for justice even when the system failed. Richard Lawson shared what he learned about the depth of this struggle and the purpose that has guided my work over the years. He spoke about the commitment that drove the National Action Network, the late great Attorney Michael Hardy, communications guru Rachel Noerdlinger, and so many others who stood with the Bell family from day one. This film is not a documentary. It is a human story about grief, injustice, and the courage of a family who refused to be silenced. As these cases continue across the country, it is vital that we remember Sean Bell and the families still seeking answers today. Aftershock: The Nicole P.
