So ends another GDC. I’m very aware that I’m ignorant of many of the problems facing the games industry in the West. My entire (short) life in this industry has been entirely in Japan, with a focus on Asia. I go to events like GDC and it’s a crash course in the hardships and struggles devs there are facing. I’m not talking about massive 5,000-person studios, I’m talking about the boots on the ground making cool little games in their own way…and no one will back them. There are so so so so so many incredible games in development that I know you guys, the gamers, would love…and most won’t ever see the light of day because they can’t find funding. It breaks my heart. When I say “so so so so so” many, I mean there’s a volume of games you simply can’t imagine out there that need help. More than any one company can realistically support. Some will read that and say “just release it anyway”, but for many devs funding is essential to realize their dream. I’m in a privileged position to be able to spend my GDC time meeting friends and making new ones, while around me thousands of developers are desperately using their GDC to find help. Help that, if not found, could mean an end of their dream. As the industry continues to go from strength to strength in Asia, the West continues to stumble. I don’t know what the solution is and I don’t know how to help…but I return to Japan now more determined than ever to find some way to make things just a little less shit for the developers out there who just wanna make cool games. @Vialixia @TheCartelDel So i want to throw this in there, there are lots of studios falling appat but there are lots that people haven’t heard of about to break through. Its hard as hell to run a studio anywhere but there’s exciting things happening here in the UK. Im looking forward to seeing them!

Was getting annoyed with my cumbersome process for making icons for objects my game, so I made a nifty icon generator tool in unity. Spent 2 weeks on it, so not sure it was worth it... but at least it looks nice haha #indiedev #gamedev #madewithunity

@OliverAge24 Google Gradient Mapping online. in the shader look into colour masks, vertex colours to define the shading values, try using the gradients as just colour then mult over grayscale textures for texture detial. Thats how we do most things in Southfield. If you want DM me for more.
