Over the years I’ve grown increasingly fond of Frodo, and I think he often gets a bad rap among fans. He is often seen as weak or a failure, especially by fans of the PJ films. Why is this?
Yes, Sam is the GOAT for most people, and probably me too, but Frodo’s heroism should not be overlooked. His accomplishments and sacrifice truly deserve to be recognized.
People will often point to Sam saving Frodo on Mount Doom, but have we thought about what happens after?
By the end of the story, Frodo must leave Middle-earth due to the psychological and physical torment he endured after carrying a demonic artifact, the very essence of evil, and resisting it more than anyone else could have. Meanwhile, Sam goes on to marry the love of his life, raise a family, and flourish. He becomes the Mayor of The Shire and lives a wonderful life.
This is how Frodo saved Sam. By shouldering the ultimate burden alone, Frodo spared Sam from enduring the same spiritual and psychological torment. This allowed Sam to live a full, extraordinary life while Frodo bore the cost of the quest.
Sometimes heroism isn’t about the moments we see on screen or major set-pieces in the book, it is about the long-term sacrifices that truly change lives
