@marybethgahan @mkerrhardy @viajoshhunt I want you and Josh and other writers to be able to make a go of it, because I gave up on my writing years ago because I didn't have the stomach to keep trying. Also, I got to write enough things that I felt good about along the way that it felt OK to quit.

I made a modestly comfortable living for seven years as a freelance journalist before finally landing a staff job. I don't recommend it, but if you want to succeed you do need to treat it as a business. Ranking magazines by tier and pay rate is absolutely necessary

When I was a freelancer, learning what word rates other writers could get from certain magazines was extremely rare intelligence that allowed me to negotiate my own pay. Writers need to be thanking @viajoshhunt for his transparency. Many magazines don't want this info out there
