I feel like the open challenge worked the best in Carmelo’s case because not only were we getting awesome matches every week, but him and Ilja were properly telling a great story throughout backstage segments and the series of matches themselves.
I’m a person who’s always valued in-ring quality over story (which I understand everyone sees differently) but one rarely works without the other. A bunch of random exhibitions are fine, but when you have people like Kevin Knight and Carmelo Hayes who are able to also tell a proper story throughout them it makes it a lot better

I have a love/hate relationship with open challenges. It’s a great way to showcase the talent on your roster but it also feels like a cop out for actually putting effort into creating stories for your midcard wrestlers. Melo put on some of his best work during his open challenges and it wasn’t enough to get him on the Mania card.

No real TNA fan is ok with that, and it drove plenty of us away for good. They killed TNA in that moment. It put them at a pathetic level in the eyes of most viewers
