I actually meant to make this anon post but this OP gave me an even greater jumping-off point for an idea I wanted to convey and it's that the romantic appeal of the Proxies is downstream of the fact that for a lot of the agents they embody 'a break'. The idea initially formed when a friend showed me some Dialyn fanart where she looked freaking done with everything and it made me think about how nearly all the agents are terminally employed in some way, and often in highly stressful occupations (cops, soldiers, running the Outer Ring in the case of the Calydons, larping as criminals in the case of Mockingbird, list continues) and their recourse from this stress probably comes in a litany of ways because at the bare minimum we can and should take them to be multifaceted people, but foremost amongst them (I'll assume for the sake of the argument) is the Proxies. I think about how Yanagi talks about liking dumb movies she can switch her brain off to, Astra generally loving to don her disguise and steal us away to places, Dialyn always lamenting her job, it goes on and on. I think a powerful approach vector into someone's heart is to have them associate you with restfulness, like a day off you weren't expecting where you can just *do nothing* for a while. It might be that most of the agents are ultimately ambivalent to the Proxies beyond general positive feelings formed from having been aided by them in the past, but there may just be a moment when one of them passes them a bowl of nachos on the couch with a genuine smile on their face that they realize this is a welcome reprieve from the awful, tiring world outside, and this place and this moment is only made lovely and *whole* by the other person being there. I believe falling in love with someone is one of the most democratically distributed human feats in history, achieved and achievable by all kinds of people for as many reasons. I've always disliked the idea that there needs to be some specific shape that must be adopted before it 'works'. Maybe Wise's 'being boring' is the point. Maybe 'boring' is the entire appeal, not necessarily to you who wants excitement, but to the occupants of his circles who never stop getting it.
