In 2024, Canada’s railways invested a record $4.5 billion to expand capacity, modernization, safety, efficiency, and strengthen the network and supply chains. Railways move 70% of Canadian intercity freight and 50% of the country’s exports. In practical terms, these investments help Canadian businesses get their goods to market efficiently. Passenger rail continued its recovery in 2024 as service levels expanded to meet growing demand. Commuter rail ridership rose by 22.7% and intercity ridership increased by 8.6%. These gains highlight the importance of efficient, high-capacity rail service in supporting mobility, reducing highway congestion, and advancing Canada’s climate objectives. Strong passenger rail performance also strengthens regional connectivity, labour mobility, and access to economic opportunity across the country. Investments in rail infrastructure and operations remain one of the most effective tools governments have to deliver sustainable, affordable, and resilient transportation for Canadians. #railtrends #railCAN #data

From 2023 to 2024, carloads increased across six of the 11 commodity groups tracked by RAC, including minerals (209,284 or 18.1%), intermodal (62,396 or 3.3%), fuel & chemicals (26,952 or 5.0%), agriculture (19,774 or 3.9%), food products (8,168 or 10.3%), and manufactured & miscellaneous (4,180 or 2.1%). Despite several labour disruptions throughout the supply chain, railways moved $400 billion worth of goods. Swift recoveries from disruptions and the maintenance of low terminal dwell times helped prevent short-term disruptions from turning into larger supply chain problems. Before the holidays, Metrolinx was recognized with an award for excellence following a comprehensive overhaul of its Environmental Management System. The initiative ensured full alignment with the ISO 14001 standard through a complete rewrite of the EMS Manual, redevelopment of the Aspects & Impacts Registry, a third-party review of the Environmental Legal Registry, and the creation of 11 Environmental Performance Standards. Together, these improvements strengthen environmental governance, accountability, and performance across the organization. Congratulations! #railCAN #environment

TrackSense was recognized with an industry award for advancing railway safety through innovation and data integration. While drone-based data collection is no longer novel on its own, TrackSense is redefining what is possible in railway safety through an entirely new, unprecedented, and innovative approach that fully supports the entire lifecycle of a railway incident detection, engineering crew management and track inspection reporting. TrackSense is a data integration platform. It provides a single dashboard view of an entire railway that consumes data from multiple sources such as track geometry, flood prediction, forest fire fuel detection, remediation and water body analysis, digital twins to structural steel analysis, and concrete integrity analysis. Congratulations! #railCAN #railinnovation

In 2024, Canada’s rail industry directly employed 38,000 Canadians, the highest level in more than two decades, with average compensation of $110,000, about 50% above the national average. That workforce spans the entire country. Railroaders are working in every region and every season, from dense urban corridors to remote stretches of track, often in harsh weather and demanding operating environments. It is work that happens overnight, in extreme cold, heat, and everything in between, and it keeps goods and people moving regardless of conditions. These are stable, unionized jobs that support families and provide long-term careers, particularly in communities where rail has been a constant employer for generations. The consistency of that work matters. It creates economic stability locally while sustaining a national transportation system Canadians rely on every day. Last month RAC awarded @CandoRailLtd with an Environment award. Cando is redefining what is possible in Canadian rail operations with its Li-Ion 2025 project—an ambitious initiative to electrify industrial switching using lithium-ion battery technology. By retrofitting a legacy, non-tier-compliant diesel locomotive into a fully electric, zero-emission unit, Cando has engineered a scalable and high-performance solution suited for closed-loop rail systems nationwide.
