On 23 September 1954, 4MT 2-6-0 76017, passing a signal at danger, ploughed through the sand-trap at Whitchurch Town & fell down an embankment. Nestled in young growth, 76017 can be seen, secured by a hawser, in the early acts of recovery with tender & 2 wagons in the sand-trap.
