I'm a bit surprised that the UK government has found it necessary to have citizens of friendly countries like 🇪🇪 travelling to London apply for an "Electronic Travel Authorisation". It's easy to apply, I suppose, but it does puzzle me why someone thought that's even necessary.

Refusal rates are coming down.. In absolute terms visa approvals are at 2021 level like there is no war going on..

The German government is already messing this thing up, there’s no other way to put it. The deadline has passed. Germany and Europe must now outline concrete consequences. If European decisionmakers wish to await the outcome of the Istanbul offer, it must be done in the context of a clear threat that any further delay in Russia accepting a ceasefire will trigger additional measures. But it cannot be retroactively framed as the condition for sanctions imposition after the initial threat has lapsed without consequences. If German and European leaders intend to wait for U.S. alignment before announcing a sanctions package, they should never have issued premature threats they are unwilling to act on, if need be unilaterally. Merz is about to lose his credibility in week one of his term. I need CDU party leaders to understand how incredibly dangerous and self-defeating this is.

I'm a bit surprised by the explicit sanctions threats made by European leaders & wondering if it's well-advised. In principle, there are 2 categories of measures left: 1.) small measures without effect 2.) measures that are costly for the EU or that were deemed too risky before.

EU moves. The US must be proud of what they are achieving in relation to allies and friends.
