His name was Fauja Singh.
Born in 1911 in Punjab. Could not walk until he was five. His neighbours called him danda (the stick).
His wife died. His daughter died in childbirth. His son Kuldip died in a construction accident in 1994.
He was 89 years old. Grieving. Living with his son in Ilford London.
He decided to start running.
His trainer met him for their first session. Fauja Singh arrived in a three piece suit.
He ran the London Marathon at 89. Then New York. Toronto. Mumbai. Hong Kong.
In 2004 Adidas put him in a campaign alongside David Beckham and Muhammad Ali.
In 2011 at 100 years old he set 8 world age group records in a single day.
Three days later he became the first 100 year old to finish a full marathon.
In 2012 he carried the Olympic torch at the London Games.
He never made the official record books. Born in colonial India when birth certificates were not issued. Guinness could not verify his age.
He just kept running.
On July 14 2025 he stepped out to check his rice fields in Punjab. A young man driving an SUV hit him and drove away. Fauja Singh lay bleeding on the highway until a passerby found him.
He died. He was 114 years old.
The driver was arrested. The record books remain incomplete.
His name was Fauja Singh.
He ran when he had every reason to stop.
