@GergelyOrosz Royally pain in the ass language. Especially on Android. No official build plugin for it for example.

Why is Rust different than many/most programming languages? Alice Ryhl works on Google's Android Rust team, is a Rust language team advisor, and is a core maintainer of Tokio (the most widely-used async runtime in Rust) Timestamps: 00:00 Intro 04:09 Tokio: an overview 05:11 What Alice likes about Rust 12:48 Rust for TypeScript engineers 13:51 Moving from C++ to Rust 14:34 Memory safety 18:12 Garbage collection tradeoffs 21:46 Ownership, references, and borrowing 26:59 Unsafe in Rust 31:21 Crates and Cargo 35:55 Language design and RFCs 43:02 Building new features 46:30 Editions vs. versions 49:47 Getting paid to work on Rust 51:27 Contributing to Rust 53:03 Rust in the Linux kernel 55:45 AI use cases for Rust 1:01:35 Learning Rust 1:03:54 Book recommendation Brought to you by: • @AntithesisHQ – verify your system’s correctness without human review or traditional integration tests – and avoid bugs or outages. antithesis.com/pragmatic@sentry – application monitoring software considered “not bad” by millions of developers sentry.io/pragmatic Three things worth knowing about Rust: 1. Rust was designed to turn implicit failures into compile errors. Where other languages allow you to forget something, Rust makes an omission into a compilation error for things like null checks, uninitialized variables, or error propagation with the ‘?’ character. If you mess something up, it’s almost certain your program will not compile. If it does, at the very least you should see a lint warning. 2. Refactoring in Rust is safe and easy, thanks to the compiler. Alice: “I change a return type or struct field, then just fix the compiler errors until the compiler stops shouting. And then once I’ve done that, I’ve updated every place I need to update.” Rust’s focus on correctness makes refactoring it more straightforward than dynamically-typed languages and Java-style typed ones are to refactor. 3. “Editions” allow Rust to make breaking changes without ‘breaking’ anyone’s code. Rust editions (2015, 2018, 2021, 2024) can be mixed freely across crates. A library on the 2021 edition works seamlessly with a binary on the 2024 edition. This is how Rust evolves syntax (like adding async/await as keywords) without forcing an ecosystem-wide migration. Thanks a lot, Alice for this great discussion! And for your work on Rust.

Outside of Coinbase, did any other major service have a 8-hour outage? I’ll be honest: did not notice anything else. Want to make sure I didn’t miss anything? (AWS had an outage in a single AZ. This should have… NOT taken down any service with resiliency 101)

cashback is dead. people surely love a 5 or 10% cashback. except it's only on random categories. except you have to maintain a $200k balance. except it's capped at $1,500 a quarter. except you have to keep referring people. optimizing cashback buries customers in fine print. when you make a purchase with @itstuyo, you might not have to pay for it at all. no fine print, no limits. you just tap your phone and instantly get a notification on whether you got charged or not. it's not cashback or a rebate, your balance literally doesn't go down. Buy Now Pay Maybe is the first thing we've shipped that pulls in people who never cared about crypto or stablecoins at scale. it sparks a level of curiosity and interest we just hadn't seen to date and we are excited to open it up to everyone. it's also incredibly fun and has already created so many fun anecdotes and interactions.

@GergelyOrosz XAI over scaled and there is no where enough demand for Grok. Anthropoc play it safe and avoided over-scaling to prevent bankruptcy if demand didn't scale. OpenAI try to overscale as well with StarGate and other projects but some of them are delayed or canceled.

So let me get this right: 1. Anthropic bans xAI from using Claude (to stop them from perhaps distilling Claude for their own model) (...) 2. xAI gives up ~a quarter of its DC capacity for Anthropic to rent and run Claude A win for Anthropic no doubt. What's in it for xAI tho?

Asha Sharma has never shipped a game. 70 days into the Xbox CEO job she's made the best moves Microsoft has made on the platform in 10 years. The skepticism in February was loud. Her resume read Meta Messenger → Instacart COO → Microsoft CoreAI. Phil Spencer had run Xbox for 12 years and been at Microsoft for 38. Asha came in with two years of company tenure and zero hours of console operating experience. The list: - Killed Xbox Copilot. The exact product she championed at CoreAI 18 months earlier. Wound down on mobile, dead on console. - Killed "This is an Xbox," the cross-platform ad that put the Xbox logo on Samsung TVs and turned the brand into a punchline. - Renamed Microsoft Gaming back to Xbox. "Return of Xbox" went up on the office walls. - Cut Game Pass Ultimate from $29.99 to $22.99. PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99. First cut after years of hikes. - Pulled day-one Call of Duty out of Game Pass. New CoD now joins the service 12 months after launch instead. - Announced Project Helix, the next-gen console codename. Dev kits ship next year. - Revived Xbox FanFest after the prior regime quietly retired it. - Promoted Xbox veterans Jason Ronald and Jason Beaumont into platform leadership while bringing CoreAI talent in alongside them. The pattern is the story. She is reversing the last decade of Xbox strategy item by item. Brand dilution, price hikes, day-one Game Pass economics, AI bolted onto the console. All getting walked back inside her first quarter. The non-gaming background is the unlock. A 25-year Xbox lifer would have rationalized "This is an Xbox" as a strategic pivot, defended Game Pass pricing as a margin necessity, kept Copilot in the roadmap because Satya wants AI everywhere. Asha had no sunk cost in any of it. She killed her own work at CoreAI first to prove the rule applied to everyone. Phil added for 12 years. Asha subtracted in 70 days. The non-gamer was the only one who could see what needed to die.

@davepl1968 I do Qwerty on a laptop and Colemak on a split ortho columnar keyboard every day. The different keyboard shape helps the brain to adjust quickly to each layout. I can't type too fast in any of them though.

When I was an intern at Microsoft, the dude I shared an office with used a blank keyboard so he could switch back and forth between QWERTY and DVORAK. It was basically magic to me that his brain could do both!

@mahersafadii The language designer prefered to use ? and : for other language features like the elvis operator and null checks and preferred if as an expression. When they changed their mind about it then it was too late to implement the ternary (conflicts with other usage).

Kotlin not having the ternary operator is annoying af, there's 0 reasons to not have it other than trying so hard to be different.

Universal HIGH INCOME via checks issued by the Federal government is the best way to deal with unemployment caused by AI. AI/robotics will produce goods & services far in excess of the increase in the money supply, so there will not be inflation.

To say goodbye to v0t3f0rp3dr02004@gmail.com or mrbrightside416@gmail.com (or whatever you were into at the time), go to your Google Account settings and choose any name available.
