Identifying deposits is one thing. Actually producing gas is another. Sri Lanka hasn’t extracted a single drop yet, and exploration alone costs billions. Yet the Deputy Finance Minister is already talking about cutting fuel imports.

This Rajapaksa Era saw some of the most destructive corruption this country has ever seen.
Emirates managed the airline until 31 March 2008.
In the last year under Emirates the airline made about Rs 4.4 billion in profit.
The government took control on 1 April 2008 and in the very first year the airline swung to a Rs 9.3 billion loss, a Rs 13.7 billion swing in the wrong direction almost immediately.
Kapila Chandrasena (extended family member of MR) joined the board in December 2008, became CEO in 2011, and the largest single-year loss of about Rs 32 billion came under his watch.
By 2015 accumulated losses had crossed Rs 128 billion.
So what materially changed? Absolutely nothing other than who was running the airline cos the aircraft were the same, the routes were the same and ground handling and catering were still monopolies.
There is no clearer case to illustrate the cost of corruption and state capture by the Rajapaksa family.
Also remember… the Air Lanka/Airbus scandal and the MiG deal were two of the biggest corruption scandals of that era, both reported on fearlessly by Lasantha Wickrematunge, who may well have paid with his life for it.
So it's about time for these Rajapaksa era operators to finally face justice.. And maybe if the thread is pulled effectively we might see who enabled this corruption cos I am sure it didn't stop at Kapila Chandrasena.

The real reason the audience is laughing is because he provided a diplomatic answer to the blunt question from Palki. Not because they didn't understand what he was trying to communicate.
India's Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, had provided a similar response to the previous question by taking into account the sensitivity of the diplomatic relations involved, which had the audience laughing and created a relaxed atmosphere as a precursor to Vijitha Herath's question.
Which is why context is key to understand why the audience was laughing at Vijitha Herath's response to begin with...
"We will take next steps according to UNCLOS and international laws" is as clear as it gets!
These are diplomatic relations we are discussing. There is no black and white approach/response as far as complex regional geopolitics and legal frameworks are concerned.
This is the very essence of a diplomatic answer (the real reason as to why the crowd is laughing), a tactful, carefully worded response designed to avoid offense, controversy, or conflict while maintaining positive relationships.
Context is key here... Palki Sharma's question as to how Sri Lanka views the American attack and when major powers conduct military operations close to your waters, how do you navigate security and sovereignity?
Vijitha Herath speaks of UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea - the gold standard and ultimate, authoritative, and comprehensive legal framework governing all ocean space, maritime activities, and resources) and the IORA Blue Economy Framework adopted by the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) to promote sustainable, equitable, and efficient economic growth using ocean and coastal resources.
Next blunt question: Will Sri Lanka repatriate the rescued Iranians to Iran or not, following US requests to hold them in Sri Lanka?
He reiterates that Sri Lanka need not support any party in the conflict, will remain neutral as always and act to take next steps according to UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) and international laws.

Sri Lanka a country so small you almost miss it on the map, smaller even than Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.
Yet it had the spine to step beyond its maritime limits to rescue Iranian sailors after the U.S. sank their vessel.
And us? We shout “emerging superpower” at every podium, but fall into silence when action demands courage.
That tiny nation at least stood upright. We, on the other hand, look bent under the weight of our own foreign policy.
Chest-thumping speeches about sovereignty are easy. but when the moment comes, standing tied to someone else’s leash is not strength. It’s surrender.

Here @sajithpremadasa is right,
America is attacking in our EXCLUSIVE ECONOMIC ZONE (EEZ). The fish resources and all other marine resources in that zone belong to Sri Lanka. So, America should be held accountable for the attack in this zone, which is not a war zone.
In a country where even a common man is fined for throwing waste into the sea, why is the government keeping quiet about this?
In addition, Sri Lanka has now been designated as a high-risk country for travel

🚨 TOURIST CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HE TRIES TO BUY FLIP FLOPS IN SRI LANKA
A tourist walked into a small shop in Sri Lanka thinking he was just buying a pair of flip flops.
First they had him place his foot on a sizing board to match the exact outline.
Then he spun a wheel to pick the style, chose the sole, and selected the straps.
Next thing he knows… they’re building the entire pair right there in front of him.
Custom sandals made in minutes while he watches.
Now the video is going viral because people didn’t even know stores like this existed.
Would you buy flip flops made right in front of you?
