The future Democratic nominee paying respects at Mother Emanuel in 2019.

I never know what to say on this day, but I have made it a tradition to revisit this prayer offered by the Rev. Clementa Pinckney during the Requiem on Racism at his church, Emanuel AME, less than two months before his assassination. "Emanuel" means "God with us."

61 years ago today, my late sister-in-law, Vivian Malone, and James Hood, made history as the first two Black students to enroll at the University of Alabama. She would go on to be the school’s first African American graduate. We have made great progress fueled by the courage and determination of people like Vivian. But more work remains to be done. We must continue the fight for justice, for fairness, for equality.

I’m a black man who doesn’t have a RICO charge. Most African American men don’t have criminal charges and don’t identify with a convicted felon like Don Trump. 50 does not speak for us.
