@practicalgolf Image 2 for me. I think golfers are usually trying to describe the start line needed so “a ball out” would mean start line is roughly 1.68 inches outside the edge.

IMO, There are 2 games within the game of golf for the recreational golfer... Game 1: Shoot the lowest score possible. This golfer doesn't care how it's done, they just want to shoot as low as they can. They will take lessons with a focus on lowering score Game 2: This golfer want's a good looking swing, and doesn't care if scores go up as long as the swing looks better. This golfer is under the impression that a better looking swing will yield lower scores. Note, I said better looking vs more functional Not saying you can't get a better looking more functional swing... but a lot want a really good looking Adam Scott swing, rather than going out and perhaps not looking great, but shooting a good score
