A Coach Cignetti jewel: “Good players want coached. Great players you can’t coach them enough, they want more, more, more. Inconsistent players want to be coached on their terms.” …(and always have a response or excuse)

Take your game up a notch or two and master playing with two-two hands and two feet. Pursue the ball with two hands on passes, rebounds, and steals. Land on two feet when attacking the lane in a crowd. Score with power and balance off two feet in the lane or kick out.

Kara Lawson gold: You have to practice and play like a winner. To be a winner you have to establish great daily habits. It ain’t a Halloween costume that you can just put on. Learn how to win practice first.

When the lights came on for the cross-town showdown between! @MHSRebelsMBB and Alcoa, Maryville did not just show up, they made a statement in blowout fashion, flexing dominance in every phase of the game and sending a loud reminde in the 101-52 win that this group is built different and peaking at exactly the right time, with an energy, focus, and execution that separated them from the opening tip as they dictated tempo, controlled the boards, defended with force, and turned every Alcoa push into an answer that kept the pressure on. It was amazing and flat out fun to watch because this was a signature team win powered by three undeniable standouts who elevated their games to another level, starting with Big Luke Sigmund (@luke_sigmund35) anchoring the paint with power and presence as he finished through contact, cleaned the boards, protected the rim, and delivered 20 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 3 blocks while setting the physical tone that never let up The master facilitator Jonathan Woodlee(@WoodleeJonathan) controlled and pushed the pace with total command, orchestrating everything with poise and vision as he poured in 24 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block, scoring when needed, creating when defenses collapsed, and keeping the game flowing firmly in Maryville’s favor with a triple-double performance that showcased leadership and control. And the British Bulldog Eli Owensby(@EliOwensby) lived up to his name with relentless competitive fire, attacking from all three levels and finishing with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal while applying constant pressure, making winning plays, and feeding off the moment without ever backing down. Together they were overwhelming, combining interior dominance, tempo control, and perimeter pressure into a complete performance built on chemistry, trust, and balance, as the ball moved, the defense rotated, the bench fed off the momentum, and Alcoa searched for answers that never came, turning a rivalry matchup into a clear warning that Maryville is hitting its stride at exactly the right time. @KrisSigmund @jowensby_21

A classic statement after a missed layup/dunk from my good buddy, John Thomas, from Ohio: “PNP…pretty but no points”

Finishing at the basket is an overlooked fundamental for most young players. You must develop the ability to finish big regardless of size, finish w/ either hand, finish with power, finish off two, and finish reversing to the other side. Quit trying to be pretty, be efficient.

Defense is all about connectedness as a unit. An average defender can contain his man, a good defender can contain and give help, a great defender can contain, give help, and recover back to his man without giving up a score. Defense is not just about stops, it’s creating to’s

Mid January is a time to refocus on the little things that make a difference. Constant attention to detail. Offense-execution, sharp cuts, screening bodies not space, reading the defender, creating passing lanes, playing off 2, passes on target, balance and sound footwork.

@TweetsbyCoachP 1) Fundamentals: dribbling with either hand, passing, Lay-ups and basic shooting 2) Simple offense; spacing, drive and kick, simple motion-pass and cut 3) Man defense: keep your man in front of you. Protect the lane and boxout for rebound

Someone asked me a question this morning and I’d love everyone’s input: If you had to choose only three things youth basketball coaches (age range 7-10ish) should focus on with their teams, what do you think that should be?

@basketball2120 I remember Iowa. It was run more from a triangle look and we would screen little on big than screen down for the little and bring him up to the ft line area. I like this action because it opens the lane up for the big to operate. I think it would be good when you have 2 bigs

kevinmosesscouting.com/post/the-ultim… So thankful for players like Payce and a guy willing to post an article about him and his commitment. This is a great read for anyone, especially those willing to put the team before themselves.

Take time to watch film and critique. Just because you win a game doesn’t mean you played well. Coaches and the players should always be concerned about the process. You have to keep an eye on the big picture.

Mark Pope after a loss to NC….”the game will beat it out of you. When we have some stubbornness and some reluctance to actually buy into exactly how we’re trying to take this, the game will beat it out of you. It’ll humble you.” This is so true and some never figure it out.

When you are working with a team, any team, everyday should be about connection. When they are all on the same page, connected, then, it all starts to work. No system will reach its potential without connectedness.
