Sometimes the easiest way to understand ranked choice voting is to practice with something you already know and love. Here we have Destiney practicing RCV by ranking Motown artists, starting with her favorite and choosing her backups. That is the basic idea: 1️⃣ Pick your favorite 2️⃣ Rank your backups 3️⃣ Only rank choices you actually support RCV gives voters the chance to show more than one preference on the ballot. It’s as easy as 1-2-3. Thanks for practicing with us, @specialeducationdc. #RankTheDistrict #RankedChoiceVoting #RCV #DCElections #DCVotes #CivicEducation #GrowDemocracyDC

Ranked choice voting works like this: Pick your favorite candidate first. Rank your backup choices second, third, fourth, and fifth if you want to. Your vote stays with your first choice unless that candidate is eliminated. If that happens, your vote moves to your next choice. This continues until one candidate wins with over 50% of the vote. For Brandon, Ranked Choice Voting is about giving DC residents more of a voice. When people feel unheard or pushed aside, voter education matters even more. RCV creates more room for voters to rank what they believe in and push for the kind of change they want to see. But first, people need the tools and confidence to use it. Ranked choice voting is about more than a new ballot. It is about building a delicious democracy where voters can show more of what they actually believe. More coalition. More choice. More space to support candidates who align on shared values. That is what makes RCV worth learning. Ranking your ballot is simple: Choose your favorite candidate as No. 1. Rank your backup choices next. If your first choice is eliminated, your vote can move to your next choice. This continues until someone wins with over 50%. Our goal is simple: help DC voters feel confident, prepared, and ready to use the ballot correctly. That matches the April focus on repetition, practice, and confidence. For Ashley, our volunteer coordinator, Ranked Choice Voting means a system that feels more fair for voters. It means you do not have to choose between the lesser of two evils. It means voters can support the candidates they actually believe in without worrying about splitting the vote. And it creates more room for people to feel included, heard, and excited about what is possible at the ballot box. More choices can mean a fresher, more open kind of democracy and that is something worth showing up for. #GrowDemocracyDC #CivicEducation #RankedChoiceVoting #RCV #RankTheDistrict #VoteYourValues #DCVoters

Ranked choice voting means the winner has to get over 50%: Vote for your favorite candidate first. Rank your backup choices next. If your first choice is in last place, your vote moves to your next choice. This repeats until someone wins with over 50%. That’s the core of RCV. Clear, simple, and built for voter choice. This matches the handbook’s voter-centered explanation. #GrowDemocracyDC #CivicEducation #RankedChoiceVoting #RCV #RankTheDistrict #HowRCVWorks #DCVoters

Big News: Lisa Rice is featured in People vs. Politics, an Official Selection at the 2026 Washington, @filmfestDC in the Justice Matters category. The film screens Friday, April 17 at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 18 at 4 p.m. at Regal Gallery Place. In the film, Lisa’s work helping lead DC’s successful Initiative 83 campaign (Ranked Choice Voting) is part of a larger story about grassroots organizers pushing for a democracy that is more open, responsive, and representative. It is an exciting moment to see this work highlighted on screen and in conversation with broader efforts happening across the country. If you’re in DC, come out and support this screening, celebrate civic storytelling, and see how local organizing can help shape the future of our elections. A lot of voters have real questions about what changes with ranked choice voting and how it affects politics. That is exactly why voter education matters. RCV gives voters more room to rank their real preferences and understand how their vote works. The more we learn now, the more confident we can feel when it is time to vote. #GrowDemocracyDC #CivicEducation #RankedChoiceVoting #RCV #RankTheDistrict #DCPolitics #VoterEducation

She thought ranked choice voting was complicated. Then she saw how it works. Pick your favorite first. Rank your backup choices next. Only rank each candidate once, and only rank candidates you actually support. That’s it. RCV is new in DC, but learning it does not have to feel intimidating. We’re learning it together, one conversation at a time. #GrowDemocracyDC #CivicEducation #RankedChoiceVoting #RCV #RankTheDistrict #DCVoters #VoterEducation

Sometimes something sounds complicated until somebody shows you how simple it really is. That’s what this work is about. Breaking #RankedChoiceVoting down in a way that feels clear, familiar, and useful so voters feel ready when they get to the ballot.
