Happy birthday, Jane Austen! The English novelist was born 250 years ago on December 16, 1775. This copy of the famous 1894 peacock edition of Pride and Prejudice was owned by Brideshead Revisited author Evelyn Waugh. The Ransom Center is home to Waugh's papers and library.

Joan Didion was born on this day in 1934. She is responsible for some of the most important works of her generation, including books like Play It as It Lays (1970) and screenplays co-written with her husband, John Gregory Dunne, like The Panic in Needle Park (1971).
