@HeroesYesterday I am working hard on 1966 high numbers (550 and above) and I would settle for VG condition. Do you have a list to see?

Thinking about thinning out the eBay inventory. 2,800+ cards, 1954–1969 (no 55s). Mostly in VG to Poor condition. Is anyone looking for set-starter lots like this? 150+ cards in most of the 60s. #sportscards #vintagecards #thehobby

What is your most cherished Pirates possession? I'm not asking for most valuable (but it could be) But sometimes, sentimental value means much more than monetary value. #LetsGoBucs

@MLB Forget the home run, he was the most legendary defensive second baseman in baseball. Record in 1966 for most double plays. Pirate for life.

We are saddened by the passing of Hall of Fame second baseman Bill Mazeroski, who hit one of the greatest home runs in baseball history. On Oct. 13, 1960, Game 7 of the World Series, bottom of the 9th inning, Mazeroski smashed a walk-off home run to lead the Pirates to a 10-9 win over the Yankees for the championship. Mazeroski’s most famous moment was just a snapshot of his brilliant career. A 10-time All-Star and 8-time Gold Glove winner in 17 seasons with Pittsburgh, Mazeroski was considered one of the finest defensive second basemen of all time. He hit .323 in 12 Postseason games and won 2 World Series rings with the Pirates. A statue depicting Mazeroski’s famous trip around the bases in 1960 stands outside PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Mazeroski was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001. He was 89.

@Pirates The greatest second baseman in baseball. The reason I wanted to play second base in little league, except I was left handed. A sweet and patient dude also, signing autos all the time.

It is with a heavy heart that we relay the news of the passing of legendary Pirates and National Baseball Hall of Famer, Bill Mazeroski. Maz was a 7-time All-Star who hit the greatest home run in baseball history. He was a beloved member of the Pirates family and he will be deeply missed.

I hope we can do this without scorching the earth, and if you kids start fighting in the backseat I swear I’m gonna pull this car over RIGHT NOW … but on this President’s Day it seems fun to ask: Have you ever met a U.S. president? I’ll start: George W. Bush.

So grateful for my time at the Post and in the DMV. The WaPo and Nats communities have been such gifts in my life. So grateful for the chance to join SNY and cover New York baseball with so many people I have respected from afar. More on both later. But mostly, thank you.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Pirates relief ace Elroy Face, a member of Pittsburgh’s 1960 World Series champions. Face pitched 15 of his 16 Major League seasons with the Buccos and was an NL All-Star three straight years from 1959-61. Nicknamed “The Baron of the Bullpen,” he totaled 104 wins and 193 saves (by modern standards) from 1953-1969, although he pitched mostly before saves became an official stat in 1969. In the 1960 World Series, Face saved the first three Pirates victories before they clinched the championship on Bill Mazeroski’s walkoff home run in Game Seven. In 2023, Face was inducted into the Pirates Hall of Fame. He was 97 years old.

@johnpavlovitz They are still very dangerous, but I think we can now safely say MAGA has lost the culture war in a landslide.

Bad Bunny didn’t just break the Internet and viewership records; he broke MAGA in a way that is deeply personal, and they hate him for it. But they don’t hate him because he doesn’t sing in English, or because he’s been critical of the masked thugs they beat immigrants vicariously through, or because his pigmentation is problematic—at least those aren’t the primary reasons. MAGAs hate Bad Bunny because he is a symbol of their greatest fears coming to life: a nation that is outgrowing them, a culture that is evolving past them, a war against progress that they know they’re losing. They despise him because, over the course of a thirteen-minute halftime show that they swore they wouldn’t watch but couldn’t look away from, they were forced to see what’s happening outside of the insular, white nationalist echo chamber they spend their lives in, and it terrified them. johnpavlovitz.substack.com/p/magas-hate-b…

One last comment on pitchers like Mickey Lolich…you would watch him, Gibson, Bunning, Seaver, Jenkins, Hunter , Ryan , Tanana, Tiant, pitch and get a tutorial on how to pitch, not be a thrower…one year, Mickey pitched back to starts against the Orioles, both wins, and all of us Orioles were amazed that he only threw 2 pitches in the middle of the plate… that’s pitching..

I, like so many people I respect and love, was laid off today. What an incredible honor it was to spend 12 years there. I am so grateful for everyone who read and encouraged and lived seasons with us. I am so sad the Post sports family won’t be there to live it with you again.

A hot take: Nats need leadership, and pitching. Go get Max Scherzer if he would be the team's closer. He could then be traded at the deadline on August 3rd to a contender as a starter or a reliever. Even if you pay him $15 million, he would be traded at a point where he costs the team only $10 million and the new team pays the remaining $5 million. (Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats)
