Fallschirmjäger commander Heydte is picked up and treated by American medics in Monschau. The end of his long war career. Heydte took part in the invasion of Poland, battle of France, Crete, Russia, North Africa, Italy, Normandy, and the Ardennes, Belgium. #WW2

A couple of German war correspondents arrived at the destroyed US convoy near Poteau, and staged a few 're-enactment' scenes with the soldiers for propaganda purposes. These images were captured by American troops, and have since been widely used in documentaries and books. #WW2

11 Afro-American soldiers of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion tried to reach the US lines after being overrun earlier the same day. All were captured, tortured and shot by soldiers of Kampfgruppe Knittel, 1st SS Panzer Division at Wereth. #WW2

Today, 1923 - the first experimental radio broadcast in South Africa took place in Johannesburg. The Broadcast was of a music concert and was made by the Western Electric Company.

Today, 1899 - Field Marshal Lord Roberts is appointed British supreme commander in South Africa. This came after a series of failed campaigns against Boer Commandos in the South African War (Second Anglo-Boer War).

Today, 1946 - Steve Bantu Biko who would become a pioneer of the Black Consciousness(BC) philosophy was born in King William's Town, Eastern Cape. Biko’s unshaken stance against apartheid inspired the hope of freedom among millions in South Africa and elsewhere in Africa.
