The #scienceofreading isn’t all that and a bag of chips.

Is it me or linguistics is one of the only scientific fields where non-experts think they know more than actual experts? It doesn't seem as prevalent in fields like, say, physics or medicine

I’ve always loved the way language is punctuated by places: jeans are ‘from Genoa’, denim is from Nîmes in France, suede from Sweden, mayonnaise from Minorca’s Port Mahon, damask from Damascus, sardines and sardonic from Sardinia, and spruce (both the tree and a neat appearance) from Prussia.

kinda absurd that students go through years of language/literature education in K-12 schools with almost 0 years of linguistics. It’s like teaching about living things but not have biology as a topic. If “language” is important for K-12, so is linguistics as its science

Just a reminder that we can implement an “research-based approach” to something + still do tremendous harm because of who research has historically silenced, excluded + erased, especially if we’re not really attending to power, oppression + injustice in the first place.

A fundamental problem with systematic phonics or grammar instruction and reading or writing programs is that ACCOUNTABILITY inevitably focuses on whether or not teachers cover the material or implement the program. Student learning becomes secondary, ignored, or often just data

@jamie_lipp I disagree that kids need phonics. It’s a method of teaching that misrepresents how the English writing system works. Kids do not need to learn teaching methods!

Dangerously wrong but also the logical outcome of seeing "reading" as some sort of technical sequence of skills Many, if not most, children learn to love reading from being read to and looking at picture books before any decoding at all

the -ty in twenty, thirty, forty, etc. is from Old English -tig "group of ten"

@plthomasEdD We should teach kids to read in a way that reflects how the writing system really works. Period.

Curriculum and programs should be aligned with ***the students being taught*** And there is no silver-bullet, one-size-fits all, prepackaged way to do that Not programs, standards, or trendy way to teach reading

When did ed reporters, not Ts, become experts on teaching K-12 kids 2 read & write? How is it possible, that Ts are suddenly fawning on them? One thing is 2 offer advice as a writer & another is 2 tell Ts how 2 teach. (1/2)
