Another day, another life lost to Uttarakhand’s deepening human wildlife conflict. Fear and anger have gripped Kamand village in Pauri Garhwal after 62 year old Mohan Chandra Malasi was killed in a leopard attack on Friday evening. He had gone around 200 metres from his home to collect fodder for goats when the leopard attacked. When he did not return till late evening, family members and villagers began searching for him. His slippers and sickle were first found in the fields, followed by blood marks and pugmarks leading deeper into the area. His mutilated body was later recovered nearly 300 metres away. The incident has triggered massive anger among villagers, who say leopard movement had been repeatedly reported to the forest department for a long time, but no concrete action was taken. Locals confronted forest and administration officials after the incident, demanding immediate steps for safety. Villagers say people in the hills are now living in constant fear, where even going out for grass, fodder or daily work has become dangerous. The anger is also growing because this is reportedly the fifth death linked to leopard attacks in the Forest Minister’s own region in recent months. Residents are demanding the leopard be declared man eater, cages installed, patrolling increased and stronger protection measures put in place before another family loses someone.
