South Park was going to do one episode. Just the one. Trey Parker said so himself - "we were just going to do that first show with the Trump stuff."
Then the White House issued a formal press statement calling the show irrelevant. The episodes were pulling record ratings. Parker and Stone saw the reaction... and scheduled it every two weeks through November.
Matt Stone told the Times that criticizing the administration had become the new cultural taboo. His response: "Oh, that's where the taboo is? Over there? OK, then we're over there."
The White House handed them a season arc, a renewal, and a punchline. That is what happens when you take the bait from a cartoon.
