Rayleigh Town Museum wishes to express its sadness at the passing of her Majesty the Queen. As a mark of respect the museum will be closed on Friday 9th September. #QueenElizabethII

#objectoftheweek We have a significant display and archive of the Rayleigh Home Guard from World War Two Most important is the definitive book on the history of the Home Guard in Essex, Warmen Courageous with a chapter on Rayleigh including photos of the Rayleigh men who served.

#amazing Our Volunteers have been busy working on various projects and in October they worked an amazing 926 Hours!

#lockdown #closed The Museum is currently closed. In accordance with current Government regulations the museum closed with effect from 1st November. The Museum is fully Covid-19 compliant and is ready to reopen as soon as the situation allows.

#objectoftheweek Kalee8 Projector This is an original Regal Cinema projector dating 1937, seen here with Ron Stewart is on display in the Museum together with a number of Cinema programmes, ephemera and DVD’s charting the history of the cinema. Come to the museum to find out more

#objectoftheweek This National Cash Register was purchased in 1934 by Hatton’s the Newsagents which was situated in Eastwood Road. It survived a parachute bomb in WW2 It was in daily use until 1971 when decimal currency was introduced into the UK See more rayleightownmuseum.co.uk

#objectoftheweek Model of Rayleigh Tower Mill This is a 1/24th scale model of Rayleigh’s Tower Windmill. Made by Norman Baur, it took him over 5 years to complete. See rayleightownmuseum.co.uk for more info.

#objectoftheweek This bow window measures 6 feet by 5 feet by 2 feet is one of the feature displays in the Museum. Originally located in Rayleigh High Street in a shop named Kathleen’s Hat and Gown Shop, which can be seen in the small picture inset at the bottom.

#objectoftheweek This metal sign would have been displayed on the registered owner’s taxi as a means of formal identification. It probably dates to the 1960’s, We wonder who it belonged to? What car was it on? Does anyone have any information on these badges?
