Growing up in Ghana, our parents taught us to hate Jerry John Rawlings and the NDC. We found the NDC unattractive, and Rawlings was labeled heartless, with chilling tales told about his “vindictive political exploits.” Our parents despised his leadership, and from birth, we millennials and Gen Z were conditioned to reject anything associated with the NDC because of his alleged atrocities. Associating with the NDC felt like an unforgivable sin. During President Mahama’s first term, our parents would switch off the TV or change channels the moment he appeared on screen. The NDC was falsely and maliciously portrayed to us as nation-wreckers, haters of the Akan tribe, and a group of bloodthirsty, uneducated hooligans. It was all lies. Over time, independently minded individuals, unbound by our parents’ biases, saw the truth for ourselves. We witnessed the NDC’s rebranding, which brought fresh leadership and ideas. Slowly but steadily, our perceptions began to shift. Starting small, the NDC has now reached a point where millennials and Gen Z, once taught to loathe the party, find ourselves agreeing with its stance on issues. We realized that Rawlings ushered in Ghana’s most vibrant era of democracy, gave opportunities to young people, and embraced divergent opinions. Akufo-Addo, who came to power presenting himself as a champion of human rights, owes his most significant political moment to the era when Rawlings was in power and he appeared to be fighting for the people. Unlike the NPP, which we recognized as a cabal of older, ineffective, power-hungry politicians, the NDC began to look like the only light at the end of the tunnel. Many of us youth can now confidently align, or at least lean toward, the NDC’s policies and ideologies. Here’s my point: the NDC suffered for decades because of lies spread about its history and leaders. The tribal card was played against them, and Rawlings was vilified by word of mouth. The NPP now faces a graver fate, with Nana Akufo-Addo’s despicable record and inept leadership hanging like an albatross around their necks. Until they swiftly cut ties with everything Akufo-Addo and possibly expunge his record from their history, no amount of whitewashing will erase the stain. His name carries a stench; people cringe at its mention. Now, millennials and Gen Z like me are conditioning Gen Z and Gen Alpha to despise anything NPP, just as our parents did with the NDC. And it’s all because of Akufo-Addo. My hatred for him—and I believe our collective hatred for him—will be indelible and everlasting. The sooner the NPP realizes this, the better. If not, the party is doomed—a CPP in the making.
