A policeman tries to ease the pain of a dog and its puppies and tries to help.

Filmed yesterday at Springs Shelter. The man is Daniel, 47. Came to "just look." Spent 20 minutes with a dog named Murphy. Three-year-old mixed breed. Returned twice for "clinginess." Visit ended. Daniel stood up to leave. Murphy panicked. Didn't bark. Didn't bite. Jumped into Daniel's arms. Like a toddler. Wrapped his legs around Daniel's torso. Pressed his face into Daniel's neck. Then went completely rigid. Frozen. Daniel tried to put him down. Murphy's grip tightened. Claws digging into Daniel's shirt. Staff watched. Nobody moved. Daniel said: "I can't just leave him like this." Carried Murphy to the tront desk. Signed adoption papers while Murphy was still wrapped around him. Shelter director told us: "Murphy wasn't being aggressive. He was holding on like someone who's been dropped too many times. Daniel couldn't put him down because Murphy wouldn't let go. Indescribable joy upon seeing someone

Earl Jenkins had unlocked the back hallway at Franklin County Animal Shelter for 11 years. Dogs usually announced him before he made it past the laundry room. One barked at the lights. Another pressed his nose to the gate and waited for breakfast. Otis in kennel 12 did none of that. The brown dog stayed on his blanket with a torn stuffed bear near his paws. He had come in thin and quiet, with sore-looking elbows and eyes that followed every hand. His card said nervous, give space, but Earl had already figured that out. Every morning, when the mop bucket rolled past, Earl stopped just outside the open run. "Morning, Otis," he'd say, the same way he said it to the dogs who wagged. He never reached in or whistled him over. Standing with the mop in both hands, he gave the dog a few seconds of being noticed without being pushed. Visitors looked at Otis sometimes. A little girl pointed at the bear once and asked if he liked toys. Before her mother could answer, Otis tucked his chin lower and placed one paw over it. They moved down the hall toward the louder kennels. After the family left, Earl rinsed the mop and said, "All right, Otis. Maybe tomorrow." That morning, the floor was still wet and the kennel door was open to dry the run. Otis hadn't crossed the threshold. His bear was beside him, worn flat and missing one ear. Earl set the mop against the wall, eased down onto one knee, then held out his hand low enough that it didn't feel like a command. "You don't have to be scared," he said. For a while, Otis only stared. His front legs trembled when he finally got up. Instead of leaving the kennel, he picked up the stuffed bear and carried it toward the doorway. Earl kept his palm open. The dog came close enough to place the bear in his hand, then stepped back as if he wasn't sure the gift would be wanted. Earl looked down at the toy, mud on the fur, stuffing showing where one seam had split. A smile didn't come right away. He held it with both hands before setting it carefully beside him on the floor. Otis watched every inch of that movement. A minute later, the old dog reached forward and touched his nose to Earl's sleeve. Then the hallway went quiet, and Earl stayed on his knee a while longer.

Rusty was returned to the shelter four times by families who said he "loved too much." When a stranger walked up to his kennel, Rusty didn't just wag his tail—he stood up, wrapped his paws tightly around the man's arm, and refused to let go. At this point, the man—who had had a troubled childhood—decided to adopt him, and this time it seems to have worked out; both of them are happy.
