Since yesterday’s post sparked some good discussion, let’s talk about the inverse of playing to the crowd. Scaring the hoes. This would be creating with absolutely zero consideration for your audience. Posting art online is inherently performative. No matter how aloof I might want to seem, I need you. I need your eyes. I need your comments. If validation didn’t matter to me, I wouldn’t post at all. There are obvious benefits to making niche work or leaning hard into your hyperfixations. It can be novel. Interesting even. How many times have you clicked on a Youtube deep dive about something you didn't care about only to ended up spending like 8 hours watching a Kappa Mikey breakdown? That might be too specific towards me... Youtube rabbit holes work because the creator made what they wanted, but they met you halfway. Letting metrics and algorithms fully dictate what you make is short sighted. It often leads to derivative and passionless work. But blindly following your whims with zero regard for your audience can backfire too. You risk creating something literally for nobody. So once again: be economical with your time and spend your life making the things you want to make. But don’t scare the hoes.
