How in the year 2026 do some businesses still prefer throwing away perfectly good food, instead of selling at discount. 🤦 Does this really hurt their brand? Whereas in Europe, Too Good To Go have attracted the likes of Harrods to sell their surplus food at a discount.

This is gonna be unpopular for sure, but I feel that we should openly discuss the data, since @hannahyeoh has got us all talking about traffic. This is daily RapidRail ridership from 1 Sep 2025, all the way up to yesterday (thank you MOT, for the great open data). Thus far, we observe essentially zero rise in usage of RapidRail. That's not what we would want or expect to see if the country really is responding to global conditions. To me, this is expected, and the explanation is obvious + simple: 1) As long as the price of petrol remains (heavily) subsidised, consumers are going to continue making decisions based on that price of RM1.99. 2) We can talk about WFH, berjimat-cermat, bersiap sedia all we want, but ultimately, economic incentives will dominate. 3) The quota reduction from 300L to 200L does essentially nothing. PM's own statement suggests it shouldn't affect 90% of consumers. So, if gov wants meaningful behavioural change, there is only one way—consumers have to 'internalise' (economic term meaning 'account for') the actual cost of what they are buying, which ultimately means floating the price of petrol. As long as that isn't done, everything else is just making tweaks without addressing the root cause. ----- Important note: My post above is FULLY agnostic about what the government SHOULD do. I know there are other economic and political considerations. I am simply saying that we should not be surprised at continued jams and minimal impact of other solutions (WFH, 'nudges', etc), as long as the primary economic incentive (namely fuel for RM1.99) remains in place.

@Thevesh @hannahyeoh You know what will work.. 1. 30% discount on tolls before 8.00 am 2. 30% discounts if you park before 8.00 am. Malaysians are money minded. After 8 am it’s premium

The World Bank has suggested that Malaysia raise the price of subsidised RON95 petrol back to RM2.05 to help reduce subsidy costs amid rising oil prices. Fuel subsidies remain regressive, with higher-income groups consuming disproportionately more than 200 litres, said lead economist Apurva Sanghi. 🧵1 📷 : Bernama

🚨 JUST IN : Effective midnight, the retail price of diesel in Peninsular Malaysia will surge by 70 sen to a record RM6.72. Meanwhile, RON97 and unsubsidised RON95 will increase by 40 sen to RM5.35 and RM4.27 per litre, respectively. Putrajaya said the current prices still reflect high supply costs over the past five weeks, when global markets were at higher levels.

Every time you pump petrol at RM1.99, someone’s paying the real price. Spoiler: it’s still you. 😱 As global fuel prices rise, the government spends billions just to keep petrol cheap. That money? From taxpayers. AKA you. Meanwhile, the real economy runs on diesel.

Farm Fresh is running out of milk? But don't they produce milk locally? The war in the middle-east is disrupting Malaysia's food supply chain in ways we can't even imagine. We need to act now to stop being so wasteful. Failing to prepare, is preparing to fail.

Malaysia is heading for a food crisis that will hit everyone. Prices will surge, and supermarket shelves will go empty. Yet perfectly good food is still being thrown into the bin. Does culture have a part to play in this? Are we doing enough to fight this?
