@Stacey21King This happens at all levels. Coaches get too caught up in how “THEY” want to play as opposed to the talent they have & what their players are capable of. They also get TOO caught up in what they hear from previous coaches, scouts or unfortunately, podcast host.

Some of the coaches in this league worry too much about what a players weakness is instead of how can they utilize their talent and skill set to their advantage to help them win the game. Some of the best defense a young player will ever face in the NBA will be from his coach…

“We’ve learned, with [TJ Shannon], he’s gotta have the ball in his hands. Silly me, we played him out of the corner most of the season, but he’s way better with the ball in his hands at the top of the floor” - Chris Finch on TJ Shannon

@JustinDehm @SauceCastillo38 @CaseyTaylor520 Lol, this is simply a ridiculous take. Mid-range shots are simply that, shots taken in mid-range. They are not always contested. You are ONLY TALKING ABOUT 1v1 pull-ups. This is simply narrow minded. At every level, you can watch any game and see TONS of mid-range opportunities

@ReachSeek @SauceCastillo38 @CaseyTaylor520 The midrange is a more difficult shot because it usually tends to be more contested as well as off the dribble. All of the stats back this up and we’ve learned that outside of a handful of players in the world, shooting 3s leads to more points over time.

It is so mind boggling to me that we have people in the coaching industry that still don’t understand why shooting 3s is better than shooting mid range shots. OHH and 1 more thing… why someone has the green light to shoot a 3? But not a midrange jumper😂😂😂 Why can’t people understand basic math and basic common sense. It is insane.

@fdlbasketball @EliseMic19598 @CaseyTaylor520 Mathematically, people are worse at financial literacy today than they were a few decades ago. A few decades ago, financial literacy was taught more in schools. There was a larger emphasis on it whereas today it’s not. Behavior changed it, not MATH

@EliseMic19598 @fdlbasketball @CaseyTaylor520 Key sentence: “this is what this dumb math has CREATED”. It’s not a FACT, it’s a creation. That is the key difference that math-centric sports fans don’t understand. Human behavior can be changed, it’s not set in stone.

@fdlbasketball @ReachSeek @CaseyTaylor520 no, it is fundamental basketball. Watch the BS today. Defenses arent working in the half court set. That is what this dumb math has created. It is not basketball. It is who can huck up the most shots from 3. Real basketball requires scoring from all parts of the court

@healwhatyourev1 @MZavagno11 The ruling the NBA made is simple; they are tired of poorly ran franchises. The good franchises are tired of supplementing them. There are 30 NBA franchises, you have to make yours desirable. This ruling is great for the sport, and will crush (purposely) bad owners.

The CBA made it essentially impossible for teams to improve through free agency. Veteran trades are more expensive than ever. The draft is clearly the best - and sometimes the only - way for small market / non destination teams to improve. And now that lever is just … gone?

@healwhatyourev1 @MZavagno11 Ok, you are trying to be simple minded. Neither of the organizations you named have ever been accused of being bad orgs. For example, the pelicans, wizards, kings. Perpetually bad organizations who consistently make poor decisions & have poor basketball environments.

@EliseMic19598 @fdlbasketball @CaseyTaylor520 You simply can’t get this basic logic point across to them. They truly look at statistics, then build out their understanding of the sport solely on that. Not looking at any of the behind the scenes things that led to it. Which is all I’m am trying to get across.

@fdlbasketball @ReachSeek @CaseyTaylor520 as a stat guy who has played basketball for decades, not everything is %'s. The actual game requires scoring at all levels in order to keep defense honest, otherwise people stop becoming basketball players - which you can see even at the nba level because of this line of thinking

@ReachSeek @CaseyTaylor520 For clarification no one said to NEVER take a mid range. It is proven across large samples of data that it’s something you probably won’t be efficient with unless you are a minority. For a star it’s a good shot and all players should work on it some to make them more skilled.

@RyenM_20 @samfranklinbbal His numbers are based on the current basketball apparatus not caring to teach and develop this area of the floor. It’s not a given. It’s a choice that has been made. We have decided to not care about the mid-range area. Yal act like it’s a built in fact of the sport.

YES. 33% from 3 is .99 PPP. 40% from midrange which isn’t even a good % is .8 PPP. It’s a lot easier to shoot 33%+ from three than 50% from mid range. You build your offense around high-quality/value shots. Only your primary scorers if they are good at them, should take middys

@samfranklinbbal @RyenM_20 So you are not encouraging your players not to take that shot, my point exactly. You’d rather they pass. Why don’t you rather they shoot it? Particularly when they have a closer shot? The defense has given you a mid-range shot, why not be ready to take it?

@RyenM_20 @ReachSeek For me, the next answer is to kick the ball out to a shooter and if you can’t kick the ball out, then you look for the mid range

@healwhatyourev1 @MZavagno11 Jason Tatum literally went to the ECF his rookie year. Brown played in competitive basketball games his rookie year. Vic and Castle did too. There organizations did not tell them to lose on purpose, or sit them when they were not injured.

@samfranklinbbal @RyenM_20 2 watch players in the half-court (at each level) get past the 1st line of defense, into a normally “wide-open or opportunistic area” of the floor, and have zero ability 2 weaponize it, is crazy. Its the most creative sport on earth, I can’t believe how narrow-minded it’s become

@ReachSeek @RyenM_20 I said 45% specifically because that is already a great number that most players don’t get to past or present. The best midrange shooters ever get to around 50%. MJ, Shai, Dirk, KD etc.

@fdlbasketball @CaseyTaylor520 “Smartly don’t take it”. U are basing this on the fact that we don’t teach it, so it’s smart not 2 take it. I am asking, why not teach it more? There are multiple “types” of shots you can shoot in the midrange. Another area to hurt the defense. Why be narrow minded in basketball?

@ReachSeek @CaseyTaylor520 Not fully disregard but limit it. Nothing to do with lack of modern basketball teaching it. Modern basketball teams smartly don’t take that shot often which has led to a sky rocket in offensive rating. It’s way easier to go 33% from 3 (Below average) than 50% from MR (Elite)

@samfranklinbbal @RyenM_20 Again, you are just assuming that they are just going to shoot 45% from mid-range. That is exactly my point, yal approach mid-range with assumptions. Why do you automatically put midrange at 45%? What if a focus on it improves it to 52%? Makes the player more valuable correct?

@ReachSeek @RyenM_20 Bruh, I didn’t say it’s impossible to improve it. I do it for a living😂. My point is that even if you improve it, it is still less efficient than layups and 3s. If someone shoots 60% at the rim, 35% from 3, and 45% on middys the middy is still the least efficient shot there.

@samfranklinbbal @RyenM_20 Again, WHY? No one ever wants to answer the “why”. They simply want to mention that kids can’t do it, or it’s inefficient. I’ve watched kids learn how to shoot 3’s, FT, dribble, box-out, screen etc. Why is it so impossible to improve their mid-range game?

@RyenM_20 @ReachSeek Most high school kids can’t shoot well in general. So I definitely don’t want them taking a harder shot than they have to, which the mid range would be very difficult for most of them as they are often contested. But for my better players, absolutely, a phenomenal counter.

@SauceCastillo38 @CaseyTaylor520 You are focused on what is happening. This conversation is about why. It’s a shot just like any other shot. You have to work to get good at any shot you take in basketball. It’s “inefficient” because it’s not taught. It’s not a naturally inefficient shot lol. It’s not worked on.

@ReachSeek @CaseyTaylor520 It is a math contest. Nobody is “devaluing” the area of the court. If players aren’t good at certain shots, then they shouldn’t take them. If they are, then they get the green light. This is how every old school coach has coached.
