A tiny Christmas story 🧵 6/6 And then, of course, it was time for Yule punch and Raccoon’s teeteringly tall, multi-layered chocolate-and-raspberry-jam cake. . story © Jennifer Singleton / Read+Purr

A tiny Christmas story 🧵 5/6 The tree was declared complete when Crow flew up to place a delicately carved wooden star, from Old Possum’s grandmother’s collection, at the very top. . story © Jennifer Singleton / Read+Purr

A tiny Christmas story 🧵 1/6 It was early evening of the shortest day and stars glittered in the already-dark sky as everyone gathered at Old Possum’s house to decorate the tree. . story © Jennifer Singleton / Read+Purr

Christmas Eve. A tentative knock at the door. Old Fox answers. The Polish Pine marten with a willow basket of gifts. Fresh carp, warm challah, poppy seed cakes, chocolate babka & pierogi made with the Fox's favourite cheddar. Old Fox is overcome. Such gifts, he says, such gifts!

A tiny story from Midwinter’s Eve 🧵 3/3 Truth be told, Possum was a solitary sort at heart, and as much as he loved hosting not one but two Yuletide parties each year, he also cherished the anticipatory hush of Midwinter’s Eve. More at TinyGardenStories.com

A tiny story from Midwinter’s Eve 🧵 2/3 Once the birds had left, Possum settled in by the fire — with several bowls of popcorn and berries, a needle, and five spools of thread — and let out a contented sigh.

A tiny story from Midwinter’s Eve: Crow and her cousins, and even a number of the smaller birds, had all helped Old Possum carry the tree into his living room, where it now sat, with its rootball in a giant planter, in front of the window and well away from the fireplace. 🧵 1/3

Ever since I was a child & had been read to from Beatrix Potter, I have longed to live in a world of animals who talked & wore clothes as we do. Books like The Wind in The Willows and Brambly Hedge only fueled this dream. Now, all these years later, I still long for such a place.

@BexBookaholic Here’s hoping that your most comforting books are also the lightest, so you take lots with you.

Tough week at work coming up and will be away for a couple of nights, so spending time this morning in my library to seek positivity and a sense of calm. All positive thoughts vastly appreciated. (Do you think I could cart all my books with me?!)

@BexBookaholic Ah, yes. Totally understand! In that case (and if your brain is also “tired” from work) a walk or a nature break — and total focus on *that* — may help until the reading comes back around. Good luck; here’s hoping it won’t be too much longer. 💚

@ReadPurr I know. Its not about competing, it's about the escapism and the break it gives my brain from over thinking everything else

@BexBookaholic I would send actual bookstore suggestions as well, but I’m in the U.S., so not sure my list would actually help. 🤷‍♀️

@BexBookaholic Try uk.bookshop.org … they sell books at a bit of a discount (like the rainforest), but also give commissions and donations to actual brick-and-mortar bookshops.

Thanks to ongoing guilt about using Ama*on rather than independent bookshops, I want to promote every indie, however big or small! So comment below with your favourite, where they are in the world and a website address if they have one. Let's share some indie love #BookTwitter
