Many thanks to all who contributed to the discussion @GreenwichEng on Anna Maria Porter last night and especially to Prof Fiona Price @humanities_chi who argued that heroism in Porter’s novel is related to understanding of human character. Fascinating!

In *The Fast of St Magdalen,* Porter chose the 16th century & characters whose fate is bound up with that of the Medici family. The novel went into two more English editions, a French translation, and a New York edition, plus another at Boston, all within 1818 and 1819.

When *The Fast of St Magdalen* was published in July 1818, The Monthly Magazine approved the novel's "correct and not inelegant diction . . . moral principles, and . . . pious sentiments," but the Edinburgh Monthly Review accused Anna Maria Porter of "hasty composition".
