It was a quiet spring training so there were a bunch of lazy narratives around this topic. Everything the Red Sox did this offseason pointed to this outcome. They also challenged him from the moment 2025 ended, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise at the start of camp. Will there be some ups and downs? 100%. He’ll be protected heavily against lefties. There’s work to do against breaking balls. Still, for a team focusing on run prevention, he’s going to be a highlight reel with how many ground balls this staff is about to generate. Plus, there’s real offensive upside that doesn’t come with any of the other options.
