@RealMadcorgi

i may be old, but I don't think that I will ever grow up. I solve problems for a living with my problem solving medium being software, usually.

@DanielW_Kiwi Well, if you must know, the staff will never get up to speed. Have never seen a well run Popeyes.

I've gone out to pickup Popeyes for my wife. It's new in town and this was a mistake. I'm in the drive through and the line is not moving. I guess the staff are still getting up to speed.

@BarDown Cole Perfetti’s goal to tie St. Louis with 1.6 seconds left in regulation. No one in the barn sat down until the 2nd OT winner. It was so loud and such a great moment.

@RealMadcorgi @slimjimmy @onehappyfellow I have a CS degree and frankly if I was forced to filter on having/not having a CS degree purely to reduce the pool I would filter OUT the CS graduates. Too many enthusiast and motivated people in the self-learning pool to discard them so easily.

@slimjimmy @onehappyfellow And fwiw, I am mostly self taught with a software degree later on. For entry level, I think open the gates and let a varied group in. Those that show their worth, stay. That is how I got my first job.

@slimjimmy @onehappyfellow I know someone who worked his butt off for a cs degree, and was screened out and told to go to a boot camp. For an entry level job.

Lineup of active NHL cover athletes: M. Tkachuk-McDavid-Nylander J. Hughes-Matthews-Stamkos Ovechkin-Pettersson-Giroux W. Karlsson-Toews-Kane Q. Hughes-Makar Josi-Schultz L. Hughes-Subban (3 years post retirement) Craig Anderson (2 years post retirement) Martin Brodeur (10 years post retirement) Even with the dubious goaltending, are they getting 60+ wins?

@svpino My company built a file format translator using an llm. Both file formats were well known. The translation worked 80% of the time. I was scoffed at when I said we didn't need ai for this problem.

I recently came across a team using an LLM to implement a state machine. They called it "agentic". They also told me it worked correctly most of the time. I asked them to write down the list of rules for moving from one state to another. They listed them out. It didn't take long for them to realize what was happening: They had built a solution using AI for a problem that didn't need AI. We removed the model and wrote some code to implement the rules. It might have taken 2-3 hours at most. They went from "it works most of the time, it's relatively fast, and it costs some tokens" to "it works 100% of the time, instantaneous, and costs nothing." So many examples like this recently. Golden rule: BUILD THE SIMPLEST THING THAT COULD POSSIBLY WORK.

@Kristi3King @middle_class_us I have seen cs grads being told that they do not have enough experience for an entry level job, and they should go to a boot camp-- as if the degree means less than a 6 month certificate. Meanwhile, h1b buddies that cheat on the interviews get the job.

Millennials and GenZ were sold college as a ticket to the American Dream. Instead, they got debt, underemployment, and a job market that asks: “Have you tried getting a side hustle or learning a new skill?”

Is this a creative way to say you were a STL Rams fan or an editorial on their last 5+ years in St. Louis and then how they left?

In 2009 Node.js was created to answer the question, "Should JavaScript run on the server." And in 2025 we can now definitively say, "No, no it shouldn't. That was a really, really bad idea."

Today's AI head scratcher. System A has fields b, c, and d that are required and well known. System B needs this data and also uses b, c, and d for its naming. AI to the rescue! Have LLM analyze data in System A and produce json for System B. So easy, and it works 90% of time.

@slimjimmy You went through some sucky stuff, but you spoke up for your family member and the regret would have been tough had you not done so -- even with the time that had passed. Be proud that you pulled through that tough time.

i witnessed a family member get raped when i was 10 didn't say anything until it came out 3 years later. mostly because the perpetrator was my best friend, the only friend i had at the time. i was a complete and utter coward went to court to give evidence due to length of time and trauma, 9 of 10 counts were dropped due to insufficient evidence. but they wanted to proceed with my testimony in a new trial focusing on that i refused. the experience was already traumatic this allowed the perpetrator and their family to brand my family as liars. we were ostracised by our community unfortunately we lived on a cul-de-sac and he lived at entry to it. his dad would come out to specifically rub the court victory in our faces and warn my friends that i was a "malicious liar". i was 13 at the time i was racked with guilt and anger throughout my teenage years. i met a bad crowd and turned to hard drugs. i was 15 at the time by 16, i was admitted to a mental institution for the first time. this would be a pattern i'd continue until 18 after a lot of work and relapses and set backs, i managed to start processing and putting things behind me

@clawrence @InvalidReturn No. Nobody wants ethanol other than those who are selling it. We have no choice but to c9nsume it since it is added to gasoline. See how e85 vehicles turned out to get the true consumer sentiment.

@InvalidReturn Who is the 'we' that also doesn't like ethanol production. Not congress. Not farmers. Not the food and ag industry. Not voters - who have not made it an issue. Everyone seems to love it. And it's been going on for 40+ years - much longer than solar and wind.

Seems hard to communicate this to the "don't put solar on farm land" folks. We are already using an insane amount of farm land TO PRODUCE ENERGY (not food). Solar is just a *MUCH* more energy dense, efficient, and cost-effective use of this land.
Simon Mahan@SimonMahan

Roughly 30–40% of U.S. corn production — about 30 million acres — is dedicated to ethanol. That same land area could support around 5,000 gigawatts of solar capacity, which is 3–4 times the total nameplate capacity of the entire U.S. electric grid. We don't have a land problem.
