3rd May 1916 - The Martyrdom of Tom Clarke, Patrick Pearse and Thomas MacDonagh On this day, three of the noblest sons of Ireland went calmly before the rifles of the enemy, not as defeated men but as soldiers of the Irish Republic. Thomas J. Clarke, the old Fenian, first among the signatories, whose life was one long act of fidelity to the Republican cause; P.H. Pearse, the poet-scholar of our nation, who taught that Ireland was not just a territory but a sacred inheritance entrusted to each generation; and Thomas MacDonagh, the Cloughjordan Gael, dramatist, Volunteer commandant and signatory, who carried the language and literature of Ireland from the lecture hall and the stage into the ranks of the Republic. They did not die for partition. They did not die for compromise. They did not die so that the Irish Republic proclaimed in Easter Week might be reduced to a memory, a slogan or a decoration for respectability. They died for the Republic. Whole, sovereign, Gaelic, free and indivisible. In the grey dawn of Kilmainham, England believed it was extinguishing a rebellion. In reality, it was lighting a fire that no empire, no treaty, no parliament and no generation of place-seekers has ever been able to quench. Clarke, Pearse and MacDonagh belong not to the past, but to our Republic for which they gave their lives. Their graves in Arbour Hill are not monuments to defeat, but altars of Irish freedom.
