The main problem with our society is thinking disagreement is the same as criticism, criticism is the same as violence, and violence is the same as disagreement.

Alito is very smart for bringing up military service requirements. In countries with compulsory service (South Korea, Israel, Russia), even if a child is born abroad, they are still required to serve in the military

@BlackDumpling It is basically the ethical trolley problem but with nukes. It was a utilitarian decision. And by that measure was the right one. But by a different ethical framework it could easily be viewed as abhorrent and unconscionable.

We are not our great grandfathers, and you are not yours. Their sins and their victories belong to them alone. Today we cherish the friendship we have built with you and I hope my candor has not threatened that in any way.

@JBlunt1018 @JackPosobiec This makes no sense. Jurisdiction and citizenship are not the same thing. Illegal immigrants are under the jurisdiction of the USA when they are here. But their citizenship is an entirely different question.

Very smart deflection but it doesn’t change the law. If you’re born here, you’re subject to U.S. jurisdiction. Full stop. Military service in other countries has nothing to do with how the 14th Amendment works. If that’s an issue why do we allow dual citizenship? You’re comparing obligations of citizenship elsewhere to the definition of citizenship here, they’re not the same thing. Stay on the actual issue.

It’s an easy issue. People like to over complicate it. If you are here legally and permanently (not just for travel) and you have children here, your children are citizens. But children are also children. And minors require guardians and someone with legal residency. If their parents get deported, then they get deported with them. They can come back when they’re adults. You can’t just step over the border, have a kid, and expect them to be citizens of the United States of America.

my prediction, subject to revision after hearing the arguments today: 9-0 against the administration on statutory grounds, with maybe Alito saying that the administration's interpretation isn't necessarily unconstitutional.

🚨 BREAKING: SCOTUS Justice Samuel Alito says it PERFECTLY on birthright citizenship He suggests that just because illegal aliens were not a problem at the time the 14th Amendment was adopted does NOT mean they shouldn't be addressed today Nailed it. ALITO: "Justice Scalia had an example that dealt with this situation. He imagined an old theft statute that was enacted well before anybody conceived of a microwave oven, and then afterwards someone is charged with the crime of stealing a microwave oven, and this fellow says, well, I can't be convicted under this because the microwave oven didn't exist at that time." "And he dismissed that. There's a general rule there, and you apply it to future applications. And what we're dealing with here is something that was basically unknown at the time when the 14th Amendment was adopted, which is illegal immigration. So how do we deal with that situation when we have a general rule?" JOHN SAUER: "Yeah, I strongly agree with the way that you framed it, that there is a general principle that's a broad principle that's adopted in the phrase, subject to the jurisdiction thereof, and we submit that our theory of allegiance and domicile-based allegiance is what explains those specific exceptions that everybody was aware of, but it is broad enough to sweep in future situations, and as you pointed out, illegal immigration did not exist then." You can almost ALWAYS count on Alito!

#GeneralConference “So, I paged through this American Bible wondering how many Protestants had seen a copy or read a verse out of any of the fifteen books. Wherever these auxiliary scriptures came from, whatever they were, they surpassed in magnitude and content my most extravagant expectations. The style was biblical, the references to Holy Writ were voluminous, the ancient story was tremendously involved. It was not the kind of book a man would read for pastime or write for profit. It was solemn and ponderous and heavy as were the plates on which it was inscribed. No Vermont schoolboy wrote this and no Presbyterian preacher tinkered with these pages. After wading through the first book of Nephi, I was ready to settle for the miracle of Cumorah and let it go at that.” - Marcus Bach, Faith and My Friends

Clarence Thomas is a brilliant man and one of the greatest justices of all time. He also needs to retire immediately. He's 77 years old. If Democrats win the midterms and then the presidency, which they very likely could, there's a significant chance they will get to replace him with another Kentanji Brown Jackson. That would be a disaster for the country. We need to get young conservatives on the court right now. Alito, too. He's 76.

I really disliked jumping between Come Follow Me one week to General Conference the next, because it meant we were skipping weeks of Come Follow Me discussion. I think this new arrangement means we cover less but we get better continuity, and I like that.

As the years have passed, I have become increasingly humbled as I have thought about, studied, and found immense comfort in the immeasurable gift of our Savior, the Atonement of Jesus Christ. The human mind can scarcely begin to comprehend how completely the destiny of mankind changed because of what happened in Gethsemane, on the cross, and at the tomb. There are no words to describe the magnitude of His precious gift. It will never be required of another. Jesus Christ suffered “once for all” (Hebrews 10:10). As one of His ordained Apostles, I have experienced the spiritual and personal moments that have brought to me a sure and certain witness that Jesus Christ lives. At this Easter season, may we rejoice in singing: “He is risen! He is risen! ... Death is conquered; man is free. Christ has won the victory” (“He Is Risen!” Hymns, no 199).

Mormon physiognomy: Good looking, clean, lean, chipper countenance, but most importantly, (and this will sound weird until you learn to spot it) face always looks slightly out of focus.

Mormon physiognomy is a real thing. Having grown up in Utah, I can spot a Mormon at 50 yards. I did this on my honeymoon. My wife and I were holding the cruise ship elevator for a couple coming down the hallway and I told my wife "they're Mormons" and she said "how do you know," and I said "by looking at them" and she said "you can't tell if someone is Mormon just by looking at them" and I said "yes I can" and then they got in the elevator and I asked where they were from and they were from Utah and he had just finished his mission.
