A former U.S. Marine Corps intelligence analyst with a Top Secret clearance has been indicted for allegedly transmitting classified national defense information, including documents sent to a recipient believed to be in the People’s Republic of China. This case underscores the serious counterintelligence threat the CCP poses. The CCP’s relentless efforts to obtain sensitive U.S. information demand vigilance. Today, we remember and honor Sgt. 1st Class Edmund E. Roberge. On March 16, 1971, Roberge, a counterintelligence special agent with the Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV),  was killed in Pleiku Province, Vietnam, when the compound he was in was overrun by hostile forces.

On March 15, 2019, ret. CW2 Ron Rockwell Hansen, a former Army intel officer, pleaded guilty to attempted transmission of national defense information to China. He received hundreds of thousands of dollars for betraying his country and former colleagues. He got 10 years in prison

He specifically wanted Nisei, American citizens born in the U.S. to Japanese parents, because their ethnicity, culture, and language ability would provide them the needed cover for such a dangerous mission. They were both inducted into the Military Intel Hall of Fame in 1988.

On March 13, 1941, Richard M. Sakakida and Arthur S. Komori were sworn in as agents in the U.S. Army’s Corps of Intelligence Police (CIP). CIP Det's Cpt. Nelson Raymond had requested two undercover agents to report on the activities of the Japanese community in Manila.

Today, we remember and honor Staff Sgt. Donald D. Griffith, Jr. On March 11, 2005, Griffith, a 97B Counterintelligence Agent with the 2/14th Cavalry Regiment, was killed by enemy action in Tal Afar, Iraq, while trying to protect fellow soldiers during a suicide bombing.

Today, we remember and honor CW3 James H. Ishihara. On March 10, 1963, Ishihara, a counterintelligence special agent with MAAG, 704th Intel Corps Detachment (CI), was killed in Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam, when the helicopter he had been riding in suddenly crashed.

On March 9, 1989, WO1 James W. Hall III was sentenced to 40 years in prison, fined $50,000 and given a dishonorable discharge. Hall was arrested after bragging to an undercover FBI agent that over a period of six years he sold Top Secret intel to East Germany & the Soviet Union.

On March 7, 2024, Sgt. Korbein Schultz, was arrested for conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense info, exporting technical data related to defense articles without a license, conspiracy to export defense articles without a license, and bribery of a public official.

Today, we remember and honor Cpt. Gregory K. Whitehouse. On March 6, 1968, Whitehouse, a counterintelligence special agent with the 541st MI Detachment, 11th Armored Calvary Regiment, was killed in Long Khan, Province, Vietnam, when a land mine exploded near him during an ambush.

On March 1, 1967, retired Army Lt. Col. William Whalen was sentenced to 15 years in prison for espionage. While on active duty in 1959-61, Whalen met with Soviet officials at northern Virginia shopping centers and provided them retaliation plans of U.S. Strategic Air Command.

On March 3, 2023, Ethan Phelan Melzer, aka Etil Reggad, was sentenced to 45 years in prison for attempting to murder U.S. service members, providing and attempting to provide material support to terrorists, and illegally transmitting national defense information.

On February 28, 1948, Army Counter Intelligence Corps agents alongside French and British military police arrested Gertrud Scholtz-Klink, the head of the Nazi Women's League and Women's Bureau.

On February 27, 2021, Mariam Thompson was arrested. Thompson provided her co-conspirator with classified national defense information, later, pled guilty, and was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

On February 25, 1754, Benjamin Tallmadge was born in Setauket, New York. A close friend of Nathan Hale, Maj. Benjamin Tallmadge would be appointed director of military intelligence by Gen. George Washington and go on to lead the Culper Spy Ring.

On February 23, 1996, former Pfc. Robert Lipka, who previously worked as a staff member at the National Security Agency, was taken into custody and charged with committing espionage while working as a communications clerk from 1964 to 1967. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
