Remembering the Silent Warriors. This Memorial Day, we honor the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Special Agents who gave their lives for our nation. These patriots worked in the shadows, guarding our freedom with vigilance and courage. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

On May 24, 2012, Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo was found guilty of attempting to detonate a bomb inside a restaurant frequented by Fort Hood Soldiers. He was in possession of a handgun plus bomb building instructions and components. He was later sentenced to life in prison.

On May 23, 1997, Pfc. Robert Lipka, former NSA staff member, pleaded guilty to one count of espionage in exchange for no more than 18 years in jail. Lipka worked in the NSA central comms room and reportedly provided the KGB with a constant stream of highly classified reports.

Today, we remember and honor 1st Lt. Dennis L. Holm. On May 22, 1967, Holm, a counterintelligence special agent with the 524th MI Detachment, was killed by small arms fire in Vietnam while participating in a "hearts and minds" mission, teaching English at a Catholic school.

Today, we remember and honor Sgt. Woodrow G. Hunter, the first Counter Intelligence Corps agent killed in the Pacific Theater during World War II. On May 18, 1944, Sgt. Hunter was KIA on the beachhead while seizing Wakde, a group of small islands off Netherlands New Guinea.

On May 14, 2021, Peter Debbins was sentenced to 188 months in prison for conspiring with Russian intel operatives to provide them with national defense info. From 1996 to 2011, he periodically visited Russia, met intel agents and signed a statement that he wanted to serve Russia.

On May 14, 2025, Ammar Abdulmajid-Mohamed Said, a former member of the Michigan Army National Guard, was arrested after he attempted to carry out a plan to conduct a mass-shooting at a U.S. military base in Warren, Michigan, on behalf of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham.

On May 13, 1945, the 80th CIC Det. captured Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner. Kaltenbrunner served as chief of the Reich Security Main Office from January 1943 to the end of the war and was a major perpetrator of the Holocaust. He was found guilty of crimes against humanity and hanged.

On March 13, 2025, Jian Zhao, Li Tian, and Ruoyu Duan were arrested. The charges ranged from conspiring to commit bribery, theft of government property, and conspiring to obtain and transmit national defense information to an individual not authorized to receive it.

Glad the Empire had terrible counterintelligence for the Death Star. 🌌💥 Fortunately, the @USArmy doesn’t. ACIC is always working to detect, identify, and neutralize foreign intelligence threats before they compromise the mission. Don’t let adversaries find our exhaust ports!

On May 3, 1917, Secretary of War Newton D. Baker established a Military Intelligence Section of the War Department’s General Staff with Maj. Ralph Van Deman as its chief.

On May 3, 1993, Steven Lalas, a former State Dept. comms officer stationed in Athens, was arrested and charged with passing sensitive military info to Greek officials. He was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison without possibility of parole.  He later emigrated to Greece.

On April 29, 1862, Timothy Webster, an Allan Pinkerton operative and Union spy, was hanged. He became the first spy to be executed in the American Civil War.
