@Real_CandRsenal I know you guys don't tend to give collecting advice, but aside from Russian/Soviet Nagants, what's a good (relatively) inexpensive surplus revolver to consider?

U.S. Colt New Army Model 1901 Revolver The Colt Model of 1901 was another adaptation of their New Army service revolver line, which originated from the Model 1892 Navy. The 1901 includes the battery lock of the 1894, lockwork improvements of the 1896, and now features a swiveling lanyard ring. Otherwise it remains the same single and double action revolver chambering the .38 Long Colt cartridge. Learn More: youtu.be/r20EjmjbZAU Check out our gallery! Webley RIC 1883 Revolver The success of the Royal Irish Constabulary revolver line propelled P. Webley & Son into the forefront of the commercial revolver market. They modified their police pistol into a compact pocket revolver known as the "Bulldog." In time this came full circle and the Bulldog was fitted with a fix shot, up to .455 cylinder and larger grip to get the compact Model 1883 RIC. Colt 1878 Revolver Colt's Patent Firearms found great success in their Model 1873 Single Action Army revolver in the U.S. domestic market. However, it was failing to impress abroad. England and Europe were already more interested in double action options, so Colt's would have to introduce their own. Attempting to share its lines and barrels with the SAA, the Model 1878 was developed to avoid a myriad of established patents in Europe. This resulted in a somewhat unusual and complex lockwork which, initially, had a very delicate sprag spring through the recoil shield. These almost universally failed and the design was soon updated to a pattern in which the loading gate doubles as the sprag. Despite some limited service in the British and Canadian governments, the Model 1878 was never particularly popular and remained a slow seller behind the single action that came before it. Lefaucheux "Heavy" Revolver This simplified pattern of Lefaucheux pinfire revolver is nearly identical to those sold to Sweden and Norway. The only difference is that on those revolvers the butt cap is completely removeable whereas on the "heavy" pattern it is integral to the backstrap. Revolvers of this pattern were sold to the Ottoman Empire and Romania in 1869, though this example is not marked by either. Check out our gallery! U.S. Union Firearms Model 24 Shotgun Union Firearms continued to improve their base model, pump-action shotgun for a number of years, however, they never seemed to change its designation. Once again this is the "Model 24," now in what we believe is the fifth variation. The Receiver is squared up more, the magazine stop spring internalized, and the bolt cover is now half-length/collapsing to help avoid cutting the hand. Check out our gallery! Ottoman Mauser 1903 As we've seen, the Ottoman Empire ultimately adopted ever major change to the Mauser Oberndorf rifle series. Starting with the 1887, they received the last of the blackpowder Mausers and with the 1903, they now had their own derivative of the Model 1898. Unlike the German government, the Ottomans kept with Mauser's flat, tangent rear leaf sight. The rifle also had to remain backwards compatible with the Model 1889, a 7.65mm smokeless cartridge rifle using smooth-side clips. That's why this gun still uses the bolt release to place pressure on the left clip wall and has a high-walled clip slot. Learn More: youtu.be/QTjfBtXmfzY Check out our gallery! Romanian Mannlicher 1893 Carbine Following the improved Model 1893 rifle, Romania contracted, in 1894, for 14,000 carbines. These were a simple shortening of the long rifle, now lacking a bayonet lug and stacking rod. Learn More: youtu.be/MhuuFnaCMOw Check out our gallery! Dutch Fagnus-Kuhn 1891 Revolver The Dutch East Indies Army had adopted the large, double action Dutch Model 1873 revolver as their own in 1875. Over time this proved to be needlessly heavy and awkward for its mild cartridge. Their own German-born gunsmith, Captain Freidrich Wilhelm Hermann Kuhn, would come up with a solution. He adapted the lockwork and detenting loading gate of the Fagnus patent to a more rigid and simple frame in 1891. This proved much more serviceable than the aged 1873. Japanese Nanbu Type 2 Paratrooper Rifle Japanese paratrooper rifles were designed to be broken down and stored so that they could be easily carried and prevent injury during landing. The Type 2 is a modification of the Nanbu Type 99 infantry rifle, broken in half and held together with a wedge block backed by a screw-in keeper. Once assembled the rifle has the same sight protectors, anti-aircraft sights, cleaning rod, and other features of the Type 99, including the 7.7mm chambering. Check out our gallery!
