Today I walked into the GAP on Lakeshore Ave in Oakland and learned it’s closing for good in July. This store has been part of Oakland since 1987. Another longtime retailer leaving isn’t just “business as usual” it’s a warning sign. Oakland already barely has major retail left, and upscale shopping in this city is almost nonexistent. Most Oakland residents already leave the city just to shop. Every time another established store closes, it hurts jobs, foot traffic, neighborhood stability, and the city’s image. Yet Oakland’s elected officials still don’t seem to understand the seriousness of what’s happening to our commercial corridors. I like a city that has upscale shopping, lots retail options etc How many more stores need to close before they finally pay attention? #Oakland #GAP #Lakeshore #Retail #OaklandCA
