He used to sit at the same corner every evening, right outside a small shop, holding a phone that barely worked.
No earphones. No music playing.
Just staring at the screen… like he was waiting for something.
People thought he was jobless. Some said he was just another guy wasting time. Nobody really asked.
Except one girl.
She passed that road every day after work, always noticing him. One day, she slowed down and said,
“Why do you always sit here like you’re expecting something?”
He smiled a little. Not the happy kind. The tired kind.
“I am,” he said.
She laughed softly. “What? A call?”
He nodded.
She thought he was joking. “From who?”
There was a long pause before he answered.
“My mom.”
Something about the way he said it made her stop walking.
“But… why not just call her?”
He looked down at the phone in his hand and rubbed the cracked screen like it meant something.
“She used to call me every evening. Same time. She’d ask if I’ve eaten… if I’m okay… if life is treating me well.”
He swallowed. “Even when I lied, she always knew.”
The girl’s smile faded.
“So… what happened?”
He took a deep breath.
“She passed away last year.”
Silence.
“But I still come here every day,” he continued, his voice softer now, “because this is where I used to pick her calls. Network was always better here.”
The girl felt her chest tighten.
“I know she won’t call again,” he said, forcing a small smile, “but sitting here… at that exact time… it feels like maybe… just maybe… I haven’t lost her completely.”
The girl didn’t know what to say.
So she did something simple.
The next evening, she came back.
This time, she brought two cups of tea.
She sat beside him, quietly, without asking questions.
Days turned into weeks.
They didn’t talk much at first. Sometimes they just sat there in silence… waiting for a phone that would never ring.
But slowly, something changed.
He started smiling again. Not the tired one this time. A real one.
One evening, as the sun was setting, his phone buzzed.
He looked at it, confused.
A message.
From her.
“I’m running late today. Don’t sit there alone.”
He read it twice… then looked at the empty space beside him.
And for the first time in a long time… he didn’t feel like he was waiting for something that would never come.
Because somehow… in the middle of his loss,
life had quietly sent him someone who chose to stay.
