JET FUEL THEFT BUSTED AT WILSON AIRPORT, SUSPECTS ARRESTED A covert attempt to siphon jet fuel and sneak it out under the cover of routine airport activity has been thwarted after sharp-eyed detectives from the Kenya Airport Police Unit (KAPU) intercepted a suspicious vehicle at Wilson Airport. The drama unfolded when detectives intercepted a white Mitsubishi Canter, registration KBM 647D, lurking within the airport precincts. While it tried to blend into the shadows of routine airport activity, the vehicle was carrying a heavy secret: four drums, each brimming with 200 litres of jet fuel. Preliminary investigations revealed that the fuel had been drained from an aircraft stationed at the NASD hangar. The plane, operated by Airworks Aviation, was undergoing maintenance, providing the perfect cover for the fuel-thirsty predators. However, their plan to fly under the radar crashed, as the law caught up with the suspects before they could make their unauthorised exit. The alleged owner of the consignment, Gladys Ndumba Kanairo, was found to have no gate pass. At the same time, the vehicle itself lacked the mandatory authorisation from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to transport petroleum products. Kanairo, alongside the driver, Timothy Wambugu Maina, and two accomplices, Kennedy Njoka Kinuthia and Abdulmalik Musinga, were immediately arrested. They are currently undergoing processing as detectives prepare to parade them before the corridors of justice. On this working weekend, I conducted an inspection visit at the Kenya Power substation in Garissa County to monitor the implementation of H.E. President William Samoei Ruto's directive to upgrade transformers and resolve persistent power outages in the region. Under the principle of Cabinet collective responsibility, I followed through on the government's commitment to reliable electricity as a critical enabler for healthcare, economic growth and improved livelihoods. The substation was commissioned in May 2016, with a single 7.5 MVA transformer. Rapid urban growth and the planned connection of Dadaab town to the national grid soon made that capacity inadequate. A first upgrade added a second transformer, bringing total capacity to 15 MVA. Now, as part of the President's pledge to end power interruptions, a major upgrade is underway: a new 23 MVA transformer has been delivered and will be installed, raising total capacity to 38 MVA. This represents a 400% increase since commissioning, a sign of this administration's follow-through on its promises. Installation begins this Monday and is scheduled for completion within two weeks. Once operational, the enhanced substation will ensure stable, uninterrupted power for Garissa and even far-flung areas like Dadaab, fostering development and improving quality of life. The government reaffirms that no region will be left behind in accessing reliable electricity, a cornerstone of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Accompanied by Garissa County Commissioner Mr. Ramadhan Mwabudzo, I was hosted at the Substation by Kenya Power County Manager Yunis Bishar.
