#PT582 #RP Some factors that increase risk of OA are having a previous injury, obesity, gender, and genetics. I think it is important for us to educate patients that activity doesn't cause OA & strengthening surrounding muscles helps to stabilize the joint mayocl.in/2L6EaLy

#PT582 #KR I think we need to be better about educating our geriatric population on all the benefits of exercise including decreasing fall risk. The most effective programs include 150 min of mod aerobic activity/wk, strength training & balance training.

#PT582 #DS I think preoperative exercises should be part of the operative process since it has shown to be extremely beneficial to recovery. I would explain to the patient that doing pre-hab would help them recover more function and reduce pain post-op. bit.ly/2L9gZiW

#PT582 #MR PTs are well qualified to make the return to sport decision and to provide concussion management. Since PTs are often on the sidelines making calls about msk injuries it also makes since to also allow PTs to evaluate for concussions. bit.ly/2JfmV4V

#PT582 #KS I like when PT's use a holistic approach, we know how pertinent all areas of life are to wellness & healing processes. My doctors office has given me handouts on the benefits of sleep/ vitamins which I found helpful so maybe this & referring to specialists could work

#PT582 #BY I think any time we can get on the same page it makes us seem more unified and professional. I do not think that these inconsistencies result in reduced quality of care because stabilizing the segments goes hand in hand with strengthening surrounding muscles.

#PT582 #TO There is evidence to support the use of group physical therapy, it may provide a sense of community & improve PT adherence. Some benefits of using aquatic therapy are that we can reduce weight-bearing & unload the joints which ↓ pain & ↑ ROM bit.ly/2IybBAI

#PT582 #YM I think it's important to understand the length of recovery needed for the specific injury and avoid all activity until the brain tissue has healed. From our lecture, it seems as though continuous repetition and proper cuing are imperative to regaining neural function

@Christo54275309 If they were apprehensive to seeing a psychologist, pain specialist or any other health professional, how would you approach this subject. Do you think it's absolutely necessary to refer them to someone else or do you think we can help them overcome the mental aspect? #PT582 #RJ

Since so many individuals with chronic pain are seeing multiple specialists. I think interprofessional coordination in treating chronic pain is paramount. Here is a study showing how interprofessionalism may lead to reductions in pain and improved quality of life #PT582 #RJ

#PT582 #RJ This article suggested that multidisciplinary treatment (body awareness, cognitive and relaxation therapies combined) were more affective than conventional physiotherapy alone for increased QOL and pain reduction in people with chronic pain. bit.ly/2MeCLyQ

@Bri_RedaSPT I agree Bri, how do you think we should suggest a psychologist to them as this may be a sensitive subject for some and we don't want them to feel that we think they are making it up. #PT582 #RJ

@Reannon26 #PT582 #RJ I think that while it is beneficial for us to educate our pts on their conditions I don't think that we should be the #1 person working on their mental fixation with their chronic pain. We can reassure them that they are not crazy and also work on the ABS technique!

#PT582 #RJ I think that PT's can collaborate w/ physicians, psychiatrists/psychologists, and counselors to help those w/ chronic pain. This study showed that pts w/ chronic pain showed increased in QOL when they were served by multiple professions! bit.ly/2yzolY4

@t_n_o_6 Great idea, I agree that psychology should be addressed as we know there is a very big mind component to chronic pain. How would you bring this up to a patient? #PT582 #RJ

Living in chronic pain would present many challenges. After hearing the guest lecture, I became more aware of the importance of how the patient perceives their pain. In addition to physical therapy, I think mental health professionals should also be part of the picture.#PT582 #RJ

@susansSPT I like that this study compared a multidisciplinary approach to one that wasn't. Do you think if they compared a multidisciplinary approach to only receiving PT there would be the same outcomes? These results only worked in intensive treatment, what does that mean to you?#PT582 #RJ

PT's can work with OT's, psychologists, nurses to provide optimal care to patients with chronic pain. This article shows that the interdisciplinary approach to treatment of chronic pain resulted in a 39% increase in 6MWT, 4.1 score increase in COPM-PER, and 5.1 score increase...

#PT582 #RJ I believe that a multifaceted issue like chronic pain is best addressed from multiple disciplines and even more so when they work together. Here's the American Pain Society's approach for interdisciplinary work towards quality patient care: americanpainsociety.org/uploads/about/…

#PT582 #RJ bit.ly/2E5idbz This article shows a collaborative care model for pts. w/ MS & CP. The key is to keep the pt at the center of the care & understand what they individually need vs a cookie-cutter tx(psychologist, pain expert, spiritual leader, care manager etc.)
