K-2 universal screening for risk of dyslexia is the first step in ensuring access to literacy for CA students. 40 states already require universal screening for risk of dyslexia, but not CA. I urge @SenJoshBecker @AsmDianePapan to vote YES on SB 691. #YesOnSB691

What can help solidify the spelling 'said' for these kindergarteners? Hearing the tale of the word's history. It may seem extraneous, but that's where real understanding is found. Plus who doesn't want to learn through #stories? #thehfwproject #tellthetale @wordtorque

The K's first pass learning 'said'. They loved seeing the i/y connection on the vowel hand, as well as the new <ay> digraph. Tap-spelling the words revealed they'll need practice to remember the <ai> in 'said'! #thehfwproject @wordtorque #spelling

@larissaphillip I teach them by looking at GPCs, even the unexpected ones. Then I share a story based in etymology that explains *why* and offers meaningful connections to other words. Kids are riveted by these stories, then move to all important practice. thehfwproject.com/home

Re: teaching hi-frequency words: I’m confused about heart words, which seem (based on FB teacher groups) to be the rising way to teach irregularly spelled high-frequency words. (In sum: You point out parts of the word that are regular, then put a heart over the irregular part.)

Scaffolding young writers to use suffixes they have already studied - give them a reference chart. Learning the movement pathway for <g> might be up next - this lesson was about using suffixes they already know so it helps to focus on that when conferring). #wordinquiry @Y1NIST

About the individual experience of learning to read. A story of a boy told in such a way that children (some as old as me) can relate to it. I especially love all of the strong, hopeful words that are seen throughout, inviting the reader to wonder about them!
