Heat waves can strain the power grid, leading to potential outages. Be prepared by knowing the actions to take if you lose power during a heat wave: Keep Your Space Cool: Ensure your home stays cool as much as possible. If it becomes too hot, seek out an air-conditioned place nearby while you wait for power to be restored. Body Coolness Matters: Stay hydrated and wear light clothing to help keep your body cool. Food Safety: Keep refrigerator doors closed. Food can stay safe for approximately: -- 4 hours in a refrigerator -- 24 hours in a half-full freezer -- 48 hours in a full freezer Important: Never taste food to determine its safety. When in doubt, throw it out. For more heat safety tips and resources, visit sf.gov/heat.

A Heat Advisory remains in effect for San Francisco through Friday 8 p.m. Temps in the 80s are possible in San Francisco. Take steps to stay safe in the heat: • Drink water and take breaks from the heat • Open windows safely to prevent falls (use screens/guards, open from the top if possible, and always supervise children around open windows) • Use fans to circulate air • Check in with neighbors, especially older adults, people with disabilities, and those living alone. • If heading to the beach to cool off, watch for strong currents and extremely cold water. Swim only where lifeguards are present. • If your home is uncomfortably hot, consider visiting an air-conditioned public space to cool off, such as libraries, shopping malls, community centers, or swimming pools.
