We also think it can be useful to disseminate first-hand recovery experiences like we described in our paper, to enhance long-term recovery outcomes and reduce stigmatization of people in drug addiction recovery.

Thus, drug addiction recovery is experienced as an interwoven long-term process, including identity change and universal life processes. Policy and clinical practice should therefore be aimed at supporting long-term tailored recovery goals.

Engaging in support services was protective for relapse. This finding points to the importance of keeping environmental resources available during pandemic-like events, which is crucial to mitigating the vulnerability of persons with less internal recovery resources.

This suggests that in pandemic-like events, personal factors, including commitment, become more important for recovery stability. Therefore, personal factors and coping resources may serve as suitable intervention targets as they can be trained and developed with therapy.
