There are so many reasons to like the Mike Evans signing for the 49ers but by far the best part about it is that he maps perfectly onto the Shanahan X-receiver route tree, especially at this stage of his career. We get caught up in plenty of other great parts about the unit, but objectively, this offense functions at its absolute peak when it has an efficient X-receiver operating at the height of his powers (and this is true for all offenses off this tree). Not only because that player can dominate on his own and win beyond the scheme but also due to what they unlock for everyone else on the roster. Just compare Aiyuk's 2023 #ReceptionPerception route percentage chart (usage) to Evans' 2025 success rate chart (performance) to see how perfect this marriage is. His best routes (slant, dig, out) are the ones featured in this role.
