In 1999, the rarest of occurrences in football history happened. 3-time defending state champion West Monroe faced 3-time defending state champion Evangel in the Class AAAAA state championship game. The Rebels won state titles in Class AAAAA in 1996, 1997, and 1998. The Eagles won state titles in Class AAA in 1996, 1997, and 1998. The only other meeting between the two teams was a 14-14 jamboree tie a year earlier at LA Tech. It was built up as the Game of the Century in LHSAA football.
