Anyone who has ever held a newborn baby knows instinctively that they are incapable of sin. Having just left the presence of God, mere moments earlier, they are as near perfection as any human can obtain in this life. A deep gaze through their new eyes shows us glimpses of eternity. If they are innocent then they are not accountable for sin and they have no need for baptism. The Lord instituted the ordinance of baptism for those that are accountable before Him, those who are capable of knowing that some choices are good and others are bad, those whom have sinned and need cleansing. The gospel of Jesus Christ teaches that the atonement of Jesus Christ provides salvation for all. The Lord instructs parents: “Behold I say unto you that this thing shall ye teach—repentance and baptism unto those who are accountable and capable of committing sin; yea, teach parents that they must repent and be baptized, and humble themselves as their little children, and they shall all be saved with their little children.”
