Protecting red pandas starts with understanding their habitat 🐾 In eastern Nepal’s Taplejung District, we recently established and re-marked 20 monitoring transects across five community forests—helping strengthen long-term monitoring of red panda presence, habitat conditions, and ecological change 🌿 This effort brought together nine Forest Guardians (including Sher Bahadur Limbu and Susan Limbu 📸), local stakeholders, and community members, combining scientific monitoring with valuable local knowledge of the landscape. Staff spotlight ✨ Meet Aadarsh Jung Thapa—our Conservation Finance & Business Development Officer! 🐾 Aadarsh is a Red Panda Network (RPN) alumnus who first joined as a Program Associate in 2017. After earning his Master’s in Energy Policy, Planning, and Economics from the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, he spent over four years in project financing at Nepal Investment Mega Bank. Now back at RPN, Aadarsh supports our conservation enterprise initiatives—bringing strong expertise in finance, strategy, and communication. Vaccinating Dogs to Save Red Pandas 🐾 🐕 In Nepal, growing populations of free-roaming dogs have made rabies an ongoing threat to people, livestock, and wildlife—including red pandas. In these shared landscapes, community health and conservation are deeply connected. Red pandas typically give birth to 1–4 cubs—most often just one or two 🐾 These small litters and slow growth (cubs take about 12 months to reach adult size) make survival in the wild especially challenging. In fact, cub mortality rates can be as high as 74% 😢—increasing the risk for this endangered species. That’s why conservation support is so critical.
