This is the oak tree that has stood in our neighbours' garden, in the same spot for probably 150 years...until Storm Arwen. A huge branch was ripped from the trunk, causing so much damage that the rest of the tree could not reasonably be saved. 1/7

After seven weeks in the hotbin we’ve got some pretty decent mulch/compost. We’re quite impressed. We kept it fairly heavy on the browns to avoid any anaerobic conditions so so we’ll be adding this to the worm bin for further conditioning before it heads out to our beds.

@briar_farm Sounds like a plan. You could also try putting up a little sign saying 'No pests permitted' Sure that'd work 😜

@RedRunsRiot I really like the Edible Acres (on YT) set up, integrating composting, wormery and chicken feeding in one set up. Low tech, but big scale. Something we’d like to do here long term. Main question mark is the pest prevention so thinking about how to solution that by pre-composting.

@briar_farm I have the same kind as you. Started off with something my partner upcycled for me. Then a few years later upgraded to the 'beehive' type. Big enough for me, but I also have a council food waste bin + a council green waste bin for bindweed etc. As well as my compost bin.

@RedRunsRiot Thanks tor the recommendation. This is just a small bin from our old place to get the population going. Plan is to use the worms from here to inoculate out larger composting set ups and get some big populations going. Relevant for chickens too, as it’s free protein for them

@briar_farm If it works well, you might need to expand the wormery! There's someone in America called Captain Matt who has a commercial wormery set up and does clips and videos on how he does it. Might be a viable way forward as you're developing more of the land.

@RedRunsRiot I suppose in an ideal world I’d put more sawdust in as a ratio but woodchip is what we have loads of so it’ll be fine. Main thing is running it through the hotbin as quick as possible as it’s expensive retail space! Interested to see how worms work it further

@briar_farm 50C. That's good going, yes? I read up on hot bins a while ago, but didn't get one in the end. Seemed like the issues people had were mostly related to temperature and green/brown mix. Sounds like you've got things just right 👍

@RedRunsRiot Pretty much all the green has gone. It’s held at above 50C for nearly the whole time. The brown was mostly cardboard, sawdust and woodchip. Woodchip still there but as it’s mostly for too dressing beds not concerned as it’ll act as slow release over the season.

@Englishomestead I overwinter my plants on the bedroom windowsill too 😊 But I only have a few. So they don't take up much space. Some people think it's not worth it, but I don't mind having a go. All the cool kids have overwintering chilli plants on their bedroom windows, no? 😎

@littlegreentip1 @o_burbidge Worth trying with vinegar? White vinegar can be used on mould. Big space a polytunnel, but can you clear it, spray the vinegar & then leave it on for a bit? Best to look up the right process. I know when you use it on mould, you need to spray & then remove yourself from the area

@briar_farm Beautiful colours! I made a paste the other day. Turmeric root, myoga ginger, root ginger and chillies. All whizzed up together. Tested some with coconut milk to make a sauce and it was really good. The rest has gone in the freezer to be chopped up and used through the year.

It’s been a tricky year for the chillies but we’re still getting some decent crops. Stand outs this year have been lemon drop, hot chocolate and biquinho. Making a small batch of chilli sauce this afternoon with all the produce coming from the plot.
