"The political field is more and more splitting into two great hostile camps: the liberal and the kleptocratic. What complicates this otherwise neat bifurcation is the ANC." NEW: @Red_Niall on South Africa after the 2024 elections. phenomenalworld.org/analysis/patro…

Very important article on Washington’s influence on South Africa’s liberal media - serious questions raised about a regular booze up of editors with the US embassy. Thanks to @phillipdexter and @RosHariMIA in @commondreams.

Ran into some vigilantes yesterday. Was with the Durban Zulus, so I doubt it was payback for Phoenix. My uncles and couzies are on standby. This is not the war I left New York for.

Africa Is a Country

The travel ban on Southern African countries is an odd one (we suspect the motives) given low case numbers (100 since Wednesday). As some of you mused: why no travel ban for Hong Kong, Belgium or Israel where the same variant have emerged independently from South Africa?

@EdythParker @africasacountry Again, not my aim here. Not defending travel bans, just trying to determine whether irrationalist and racist or something else

@EdythParker @africasacountry Anyway, tapping out of this now. Thank you for the discussion. The case you’ve made against travel bans was useful to hear. I agree they are not the most appropriate response, even if I’m not as appalled by them as most.

@EdythParker @africasacountry facie case for colonial attitudes being the operative factor here. Im a political economist of c I don’t think policy making happens in a vacuum. I just happen to not believe that racism explains *everythign* the west does. Which is weirdly controversial these days

@EdythParker @africasacountry But the grounds in which they are targeting neighboring countries and Egypt are entirely diff. U Would have to show that the risks in each case (or rather their perception thereof) are identical in order to demonstrate inconsistency /bias

@EdythParker @africasacountry I think part of the prob is that we are having two diff debates. I’m not trying to make a hard case in favor of travel bans. But I am arguing that there is clearly enough ambiguity around them - even for experts - as to make it unfair to see them as simply a product of prejudice
