Building for the Reddit 'Games with a Hook' hackathon today. I'm working on an action game heavily inspired by those early, nostalgic Java-era games by Gameloft. If you grew up playing games on a keypad phone back in the day, you're going to want to play this.

💰 BOUNTY: Reddit is giving away $40,000 to game developers, and this one is beginner-friendly Reddit and Phaser have teamed up to run a virtual hackathon challenging developers to build retentive, replayable games for the Reddit community. 21 days left, and the bar to enter is genuinely accessible. 🏢 Host: Reddit + Phaser 💵 Prize pool: $40,000 USD ⏳ Deadline: 15 July 2026, 6:00pm PDT 🏷️ Gaming, Beginner-friendly, Web 👥 1,300+ builders registered 🧠 The challenge: Build a game on Devvit, Reddit's Developer Platform, using Devvit Web. That means you can use tools you already know: React, Phaser, three.js, or even a full game engine like Godot, GameMaker, or Unity. The core requirement is simple: build something that makes Reddit users want to come back tomorrow. Think daily challenges, progression systems, unlockables, social dynamics, or community-driven content. Reddit wants a hook, not a gimmick. The ten Honourable Mentions alone make this one of the more forgiving prize structures around. ⚖️ Judging is based on four things: delightful UX, polish and launch-readiness, how Reddit-y the experience feels (community-minded, not Reddit-themed), and how hooky it is. Does it create a reason to return? That is the question judges are asking above everything else.
